Basic stick twirling

How do you do a basic stick twirl step by step?
I'm looking for something that Thomas Lang does while playing the drums where he twirls the stick.

Re: Basic stick twirling

try it with pencils first(my friend has special ballenced pens he uses, also hes not a drummer) I think the regular "drummer" type(he tryed showing me) is just using the 3 middle fingers(thumbs are not usaly part my friend was explaining).I AM NO EXPERT!

Re: Basic stick twirling

Well if you're wanting to ..."know" hwo to soin between your fingers. place the stick between em, bout in the middle of the stick. Then iono, best way I can describe the movement is rocking your 2 fingers back and forth in a fluid type of motion. Try it and it'll come eventually, just a simple motion really, but you feel so stupid when you first are trying to get it :P

Re: Basic stick twirling

Isn't there a site somewhere that illustrates stick twirling? I seem to remember running across it once, but didn't bookmark it, or spend any time trying to follow the directions. All my attempts at trying it on my own have failed miserably. My only consolation is that when I asked Kenny Aronoff to teach me, he said he can't do it either!

Cool Re: Basic stick twirling

this is gonna sound really stupid but my sister taught me how to do it when she was a majorette twirling baton. The easiest way I know how to describe it is to do what was already suggested above. Put the stick in between your first and second finger about half way up the stick and shuffle your fingers back and forth. It will look and feel very foolish at first, but it will come.

Try not to practice at gigs if you can help it! hehehe

Re: Basic stick twirling

Youtube has a lot many videos for this. I found 3 tricks there, but could master none. Practice is all we can do. Keep on practicing!
