home sound proofing

I was just wondering what some of you do to sound proof where you play at or if you do it at all.

I am getting a bunch of old blankets together to hang on the wall and they seem to work well but I know the best would be to just buy the foam stuff.
Ive also heard that the egg crate foam that you can get in a lot of places works well also.

Having blankets hanging all over your wall won't exactly be the most attractive thing, unless you have nice decorative blankets. The egg crates would be pretty nasty to look at too.

Do you have a separate room dedicated to music? That'd be the only scenario in which I would seriously consider soundproofing a room.

That is a tough question right there. Russ has brought up a great point in the one dedicated room thing. I myself do have a dedicated room and I use egg shell crates ( but then again I have an egg farm 1/2 mile away where I can get the real big ones that don't fold) I paint them all one color and it works great. But to each their own on that one. Anything that can absorb and/or deflect sound waves will cut down on outside noise. To totally sound proof it would be very expensive!! Good Luck!!

The egg crates were free and that's pretty cheap I think. Again, I have the ones which are 2'x2' square and are used at the packaging facility. I don't think they cost much to begin with. Oh .... I just remembered where else I saw them ...... McDonalds!!! Thats how they (or used to) recieve their eggs. They come in bulk in those 2'x2' kinda cardboard like crates. So don't be afraid to ask chain restaurants if they have any. I think I saw someone post carpet reminants. That will cut down the noise as well, especially if you can get the padding that goes underneath the carpet!! That stuff works great on it's own, if you put up a couple of layers. Good Luck!!

It really depends on what the wall is made out of. If it's drywall, simply use a thumb tack in each corner. If it's wood covered wall ( like pine or something) finshing nails would work. Now if you prefer to have no holes, Velcro works good as well. Where I practice is in the basement, which is a finished basement. I put the egg crates on the two concrete walls using Liquid Nails. You can get that at Lowes. I used the one which was the weakest adhesive they make, so if I ever have to take it down I can and remove the adhesive fairly easily. If you use that strong stuff, well the adhesive will remain there and is nearly impossible to get off the wall!! The other two walls are drywall and just used tacks.

I've done a lot of research on the internet on this topic and I suggest anyone looking to soundproof do the same. quilts and egg carons will dampen the sound in the room, but don't do much for the outside volume. The best thing you can do is set yourself up in an inside room with all brickwalls and try to close everything up as airtight as possible.

Seriously, look up a lot of sites about the various techniques and figure out what will work best for you.

Yep!! All 4 walls including the door is covered in egg cartons. The only purpose for doing this was to cut down the outside noise. It does also help deflect sound waves and you won't get feedback nearly as quick as you would with nothing at all. There are many ways to do sound proofing. My way works for me but is not the only way to do it. I see others say blankets and such ......... that also works as well. I know one guy that got the foam egg crate style stuff from Home Depot and used that. (it's the kind of foam you'd find they sell for beds as extra cushion) Many different ways to do it, but it really boils down to what the walls are constructed of and how much insulation is in them and so on.
