ATTENTION ALL DRUMMERS! Your opinions are required

My name is Jon Loizou, I am an Industrial Design student at Loughborough University in England (and also a fellow drummer). I am doing a study into electronic drums and particularly their compatability with an acoustic kit. As far as I can see, the opporunities are quite slim at the moment unless you are willing to compromise your setup and/or spend a lot of money!

Please add your thoughts, complimentary or otherwise!

Cheers,

Jon.

Ive only played on one a few times and for a short while had part of one added in with my regular drumset.

so ask away whatever you would like to know about and I will answer as best as I can.

Right...

Hi, thanks for the reply. I'm looking at how electronic drums are integrated into an acoustic kit, so your situation is perfect.

What I am looking at is any difficulties you find with your current setup:
- Did you have to move things around to fit the electronic parts into your setup?
- Was it expensive to add electronic pads, a brain and a stand for each to your kit?
- Would it have been more useful to have a single pad with a built in brain instead of a brain that is designed to supply an entire kit of electronic drums just feeding one/two/three pads?

I am designing an integrated v-drum/brain that has a bracket that is universally attachable to any setup. Would you find this useful? Especially if it cost less than having to buy a brain, pads and stands?

Cheers,

Jon.

the onee that I was using was an older rolans set up that was an electronic drum set and I used the pads and the brain on my kit.

I had a kinda hard time with it because at the time I didnt have a rack to set it up on but even then it was hard to et it set up just right so that I was not hitting it by accedent when hitting other drums.

anouther concern I had about it was getting all the wires ran to the brain and then back out.

I think they work great when you really need them and I have heard great examples of this but for what they cost it is almost not worth it for me to go out and buy them.

What you are talking about for the single pad with a brain already in it sounds like a great idea as long as it has a lot of diffrent sounds to it so that you can find that one thing that you really need and one song and then be able to cahnge it to somthing else with just a push of a button.

for instance on one song I need wind chimes but on the next song a tamborine etc. etc. but be able to just reach over and be able to touch with my drum stick the next sound that have programed in for that perticular song.

Also for marketing purposes it needs to come with a way to mount it strait to kit with out having to go out and buy more hardware just to mount the thing.

the biest issue I see is just mounting it on your kit wether you have a small or big kit.

I would love to have somthing like what you are talking about if the price is decent. Thats why I dont have an elctric kit now is because it just cost to much. but the sounds that you can get out of them now is great and sounds very real.
one other thing and thats mesh heads.
they are so great to play on.

if you would like to know anything else please just ask.

of course thats a given i had to because i wanted to integrate into my kit. but it wasnt that hard of a change

no it wasnt expensive to do it because i had the old rack that came with the electronic kit so i integrated that into it.

no because i can have the different pads set up differently around the kit and i can have different sounds. but as for having one pad with a brain it has been done already roland has a couple out here are the names
theres the roland SPD-S,SPD-20,HPD-15

drummer 111 Im glad you know more about it than I do.

I guess I am kinda stupid when it comes to elctronic drums (and my spelling)

But I just ws putting out what I thought.

By the way the kit that I used was on a rack but I had a really hard time putting it in with my kit. but I was trying to put the pads inbetween the drums and every thing else and I was in a very confined space.

yeah i knwo it took me a couple of hours to get it set up right where i wanted it

Thanks, I've already looked at the products you mentioned above. They still have flaws that I would like to design out, particularly from the point of view of being pretty ugly, and also of needing their own stand and being quite large and hard to incorporate into an existing acoustic setup. I've been around and seen some kits where people use these, and they had trouble getting them in without moving things. They also are hard rubber pads and so don't have the 'real feel' of a v-drum with a mesh head, which is something I would like to incorporate into a new product.

Cheers for the feedback people, keep it coming!
