Fusion or Standard What kind of drumsets do you prefer? I have a fusion set, and I find I can get a standard set sound out of my drums with the right tuning. (I would have done this as a poll but I messed it up, sorry) |

| | | Personally, I can't go without the low thump of my "16 floor tom. I'd like to get an "18 as well but there's only so much I'm willing to lug around for the sake of my kit.
I love my "22 bass drums aswell. Again I wish they could be deaper sounding but we all need some kind of bounce from the head.
I'm beggining to appreciate the sound of higher toms, but at the same time I'm also loving the tones I'm starting to get out of my "12 and "13.
I think I'll need to get some more focused heads on my roto toms so they can mix with the kit a little better. |

| | | I played "standard" sets for a thousand years, & I loved those BIG floor toms.
BUT, the sounds of the newer fusion kits with the small toms is really growing on me. When I bought this last fusion set I added a 7"x8" & also a 14"x16" floor tom. More & more I'm liking the 7"x8" and the 8"x10". However I still do like the sheer power of those biggies.
I used to be undecided, but now I'm just not sure. |

| | | Back when I first started playing standard sizes were the only option. These days fusion are pretty much the "preferred" sizes due to the fact that the toms fall in even increments ie...10,12,&14. You are not jumping from a 12 straight to a 13(only 1" increment difference)From what I see majority of the people do these days is get a fusion kit and then add a 16" floor tom if they wish. |

| | | My plan is to add a 16" floor tom like you guys said most people do. Like skinslapper said that thud you get out of it is irreplaceable. And as you said upstroke that 10X8 is starting to grow on me too, especcially with these moongels i put on it. |

| | | Hello ekdrummer;
Every body had a particular sound they like. And, that's good. It's what gives our music a variety of sound. I told my son that when he goes to buy a cymbal, never look at the label. Just hit that puppy. You will either like it or you won't.
The same goes for drums. the way you tune them, the sizes, the style of music you like. All of these things will make everything about you and your drums sound unique. There are some basic rules about having the tension equal all the way around the drum, but that's really about all. Everything else is "Make it sound YOUR way" If you like BIG floor toms--goferit. I once bought a double bass set back in 1960 that had 14x18 bass drums, but the floor toms were an 18x18 and a 20x20. Those floor toms would move the foundation over 3 feet, but the bass drums were like pounding on a pillow with a sponge. Live and learn. |

| | I prefer the standard sets, I like the bigger toms and I spend less buying add on toms of smaller size. That just may be because of the set I own. I have a Tama Swingstar and the smaller add on toms run about $70-$120. |

Only kidding. If you find your getting a little too much tone on those puppies, you might want to consider ditching the muffling devices and adding a less resonant reso head. I was forever throwing tape and all sorts of crap onto my drums for dampening until I checked out this site... http://home.earthlink.net/~prof.sound/id5.html
It has tought me how to tune and tune I did. Now my drums sound however I want them and no muffling. Thanks prof. Sound!! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
