Alright we need to get some activity in this forum so..... What is your favorite groove, beat, lick, whatever from a song? I can think of alot from some rush songs, Led Zep. anything....

First that springs to mind is King Crimson's "Fracture" from "Starless and Bible Black", quite an epic track but Bruford's drumming is consistently interesting and thoroughly rocking. There's a little one handed snare roll at one point that acts as a fill and extends into the next bar that gets me every time - it's the little touches, you know?

In my opinion, two of the best albums in terms of drumming (in fact two of the best from any view point) are "Spiderland" by Slint and "Deceit" by This Heat. Both unreal. I recently saw This Heat's drummer, Charles Hayward, live in Bristol and just couldn't believe it. By far the best drummer I've ever seen.

Also "When I see Mommy I Feel Like a Mummy" by Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band. Great stuff.

Generally speaking, I'm working on a number of variations of the Brazilian baião beat, including a couple that make use of the cowbell footpedal I picked up a while back (gotta find a use for it, no? LOL).

In terms of beats from songs, a couple of my favorites are:

Manu Katche, on "My Secret Place" (Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm, Joni Mitchell)

Stewart Copeland, the half-time groove that starts out the tune, "So Lonely"

My favourite is in Neil Peart's solo - Der Trommler (R30 Tour), where he does the double-hand crossovers... by the way, can someone write down for me what he does there? In Anatomy of a Drum Solo, his latest DVD, he plays it slower, but still then its too fast for me to pick up because of how complex it is.
