I was taught for 1 year, then I got cocky and thought I new enough to go it on my own. The lessons I was taught were invaluable and if I could I'd go back to a teacher. Drummers I've met who are constantly studying are far more polished and just as creative.

I'm relatively new to drumming, and I'm predominantly going the self taught route. But I did have years of piano lessons as a kid, and I retired as a trombone player from an Army reserve band, so I can read music really well, which I think is a great help going in. I say I'm predominantly self taught but I have a friend / drummer from the Army reserve band who's in the the Drum Corps hall of fame for his drumming and instructing of drum lines. I call him often when I get in a rut, or need drumming advice or help. So I haven't taken formal drum lessons, but I have access to a great resource. Once I get to the point where I don't think I can improve anymore going this route I will start taking formal lessons from him on a regular basis.

I am a self taught drummer, I marched snare for one year and dropped out. I have only been playing for 4 years tho so I have no skillz. But that dont keep me from learning...

Well when your parents are divorced and you see one parent every other weekend and when you have a football game every friday night and they last long, not to mention the 30 min drive up to your parents house. It gets to be stressful. So I dropped out.

I've had a scant few lessons and have been mentored by some legendary figures early on but for the most part I am self-taught.

Nothing to be ashamed about lessons can be a great thing!! If my situation allowed I would schedule some myself.

No way man! You should keep getting lessons as long as you can. They prevent you from learning bad habits and getting sloppy with the important stuff.

That is true, they do help alot with technique among other things.
