Does anyone have any experience with drum shields?

At my church, they set up a ghetto "shield" around the drums so they could mic up the individual drums ad make the sound come out of the sound system. However, I don't think it really does anything. The shield is really low quality and I don't even know where they got it... It's basically a couple pieces of clear plastic hinged together.

But anyway, anyone know any good quality drum shields? Do they work well in isolating the sound?

I know at the local music shop they have one around the everyone can play kit and it seams to keep a lot of the sound in the drum room instead of all over the store but it also seams to be a little louder sitting behind the kit with all your hits coming right back at you as well.

Im planing on etting one in the near future to keep my kid from climbing all over the drum set when daddys not around.

I like this place because it has several features other than just selling the drum sheild. For one thing, the free advice feature they offer isn't a joke or a gimmick. I've recieved wonderful service from this place. But of course, the shield selection itself is great, too. Mostly I like them because there's a lot of variety and lots of things in different price ranges. I got a pretty nice shield for a comparatively cheap price, which is good, as I'm a student musician and cannot afford the best equipment yet.

I used to use a shield at my church, but it killed the tone, so I just convinced everyone to play/sing louder, haha.

I have helped build one before.

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and tell them you want plexiglass to build a drum shield. Get between 4 -5 panles about 4-5 feet tall, you can also get it in different thicknesses.
Also, get piano hinges to attach the panels together.

Wow, thanks for the tips! How much money do you save by building your own? How difficult is it and how does the home-made one compare with some of the higher end drum shields on the market?

The shield I helped make was for my church. I was one of 3 drummers and the other two were pounders.

It wasn't difficult to make at all. You need the plexiglass, piano hinges(or anthoer type of hinge) saftey glasses, and a drill.

Comparing to the higher end drum shields on the market (I don't know, I have never used a high end professional drum shied (we've always made them.) So, I would say it worked great. I didn't feel like my head was being blown of in an accousticly(sp?) challenged church when the other drummer that has no sense of dynamics was playing.

Unfortunetly, I don't. I am not at that church any more.
