The shield I helped make was for my church. I was one of 3 drummers and the other two were pounders.
It wasn't difficult to make at all. You need the plexiglass, piano hinges(or anthoer type of hinge) saftey glasses, and a drill.
Comparing to the higher end drum shields on the market (I don't know, I have never used a high end professional drum shied (we've always made them.) So, I would say it worked great. I didn't feel like my head was being blown of in an accousticly(sp?) challenged church when the other drummer that has no sense of dynamics was playing.
