punk set?

Noob here,

I just want to know if I could make a base drumset made for punk rock for under $550? I need a tip on what stuff to get, I'm a beginner drummer coming from the bass guitar punk world and I need my first set to last some few years...

I'm looking forward to getting a Ludwig Shells, low profile snare stand, performance hi-hat stand, Zildjian Planet Z Cymbals and maybe change the heads if it sucks, or I'll make a custom modded Pulse Pro set with the Evans heads, double bass pedal, Zildjian/Sabian hybrid cymbals, and upgrade the hi-hat and snare stand to something more decent...

THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!

BJ.

Given you're starting out, I think you'll do well to keep it cheap. Pulse and ludwig would be 2 good, hard wearing brands to get you started.

Getting started in the punk genre, I'd go for a simple 4 piece drum setup. 22 inch bass drum, 12 or 13 rack tom, 16 inch floor tom and snare. I recomend a wood snare for begginers, just 'cause they're easier to tune, but metal is fine too.

New heads are always a plus and evans are the shizz, in my opinion. Any cymbals would be good at this point, just make sure you've got hi-hats and a decent "16 crash to blast.

Good luck, let us know how you go.

Re: punk set?

I'm not sure about Pulse (I've read alot of bad reviews, but that means little) but Ludwig makes great drums. Also, I think Ddrum has some cheap Punk style drum sets on musiciansfriend.com

I haven't heard that many good things about the Planet Z cymbals but...I dunno. I know for sure, Zildjian K, K customs and A Customs are listed by Zildjian as best for punk...but they cost ALOT (I use A Customs for Death Metal, their great cymbals). I know if you want some cheap starter cymbals, Sabian makes some good sounding ones that are really cheap.

I hope this was at least a little help. Good luck with it bud, Punk is the way to go

Re: punk set?

I played punk for 4 years...anything from my own stuff to crass, rancid, greenday, op ivy, the misfits etc.

the thing about punk..is that its raw and it's whole concept is not about being pricey. Punk's not even supposed to sound good. If you don't want to go with pulse (don't really blame you i'd shudder too..)
I would get a pearl forum with some zildjian zbts (i have them myself..)...I used to have sabians (from b8s to higher end models) and i never liked any of them. I found them to be louder than necessary and i never liked their sound. So for only 20 bucks more you can get a zbt pack and it will sound much better. The forum is not a glamourous drum set...but with your budget...unless you have a dolt selling something great on ebay you're not gonna find much. and like i said even though the forum isn't a spectacular set..i believe it's perfect for punk and that it's better than pulse or groove percussion.
hope my opinions were of some help
chow

Re: punk set?

I think you can easily find a really nice used set on ebay or craig's list for a little more than that, like $50 more, nothing major.

Re: punk set?

Pulse drums are fine for the beginner. I got a set for my daughter and with good heads & proper tuning (this is key with ANY kit) they sound fine. The thing you need to do is let YOUR ears tell you what’s good and what isn't. Go to a local shop and try out kits in your price range just make sure they're tuned properly. Good Luck.

Re: punk set?

These Taye kits are great for the money.

Drum sets-RockPro

These are the lower line (but a bit smaller sizes) but still decent and especially for the money, plus the throne and cymbals are included. If you're near VT it would be cheaper to pick up as shipping is around $100 on kits these days.

Drum sets-Orbitone

This might fit the bill too.

Ludwig Accent LR1125RC from zZounds.com!
