Unhappy Double Bass Pedal Problems - Advice Needed Badly

Hey guys,

So in the past, as i can remember, my DB pedals worked fine for me. But since I just recently came back from summer vacation (all through which I didn't get a single opportunity to play drums), my pedals felt very weird. I couldn't get them to feel right. Since my legs are very long, my throne is set pretty high, and I sit under a cushion that is fixed onto the throne so that my legs are high enough off the ground. And I just can't get it right! I mean, when make the tension loose, the pedal beaters are set very far away from the bass drum head, but when i rest my foot on the pedals, the beaters are already practically touching the head! And when I tighten the tension a little, its not as bad, but i can't seem to get the pedals to have equal tension (well, not really equal; since the Pacific Drums by DW pedals I own has slave pedal footplate very high because of the poor spring/cam construction, and other reasons, the right pedal tension has to be slightly higher than the left footplate's). So, any ideas or helpful suggestions? I mean, is the problem with the way/how high I'm sitting? Or is it the way I'm positioning my feet? Or is it the fact that I'm having trouble tuning it? Or is it the pedal; maybe if i purchased a new and better one, adjusting it to the way I want it to be? Please help; any help would be appreciated, because i've never really had this problem before and it's really frustrating.

I had a similar problem to you awhile back. Just set up everything how it was previously and start slow. Just do a really basic beat at about 90 BPM using both feet until you begin to feel comfortable again. When I had this problem, it was me, not the equipment that was being weird if you get what I mean.

I'm just 5'10" but my son who is 6'2" also plays dbl pedal. He uses DW 9002 and he does the heal to toe method. That's not enough, a Sound Percussion Throne is what solved his throne problem. To build up the leg thing, try bicycling at least 2 mile a day to strengthen the leg muscles. This will give you even disperse a more even push on the pedals. Hope this helps.

Re: Double Bass Pedal Problems - Advice Needed Badly

Take the guys advice above and see if that helps. I'm 6'1", my legs are long, but my knees are say 15-20 degrees below parallel to my quads. I play heel up.
Also, your pedals should be of good enough quality that you shouldn't need to adjust the slave and main pedal that drastically from one another. A high foot plate and a lower one on the other side would screw me up for sure, same with tension. You should be able to have the adjustments exact on the foot plates as far as height. Plus, with the pedals setting on the floor or on a table, pull back on both beaters at the same time and distance, let go, and they should swing in unison. if they're not doing that, your learning to play double bass out of balance, which ultimatly will not be consistant.
Spend the $ on a good set of Eliminators and be done with it as far as pedal quality goes. The rest is up to you man.
Good luck

Re: Double Bass Pedal Problems - Advice Needed Badly

If thats true, i should be an amazing double bass player by now because i ride my bike about every other day for about 6-12 miles lol. Also i have a simalar problem with my gibraltar pedal, the slave pedal is much slower than the master pedal. i just left it alone because i couldent figure it out and now i barely notice it.
