help in playing the drums

hi to everyone here at drumset connect!

i am really a beginner at playing the drums and i was wondering if you could give me song suggestions on what should I start playing along with first. I really don't know what songs to play since I am a beginner. I would not want to play the harder ones right away cause I might not get to play along with it and I could just get discouraged. So will you give me songs for beginner durmmers???

Like you said pokster, any song

Pick one song you like,
if the song has a little 'meat' to it, so be it
one thing that you'll learn is that its more fun to do things you like, yeah there is the practicing and basics.

Just look for a song that has a fill you like. (yeah sorry no specfic songs either )

Re: help in playing the drums

I'm with jamie, just look up some drum tabs for a song you like...or just play by ear, whatever you prefer. If it sounds hard, after you learn it you'll be that much better Or you coud start with something perty easy and sounds good...least I like the song
bound for the floor - local h
welcome home - coheed and cambria ... couple tricky fills that you'd have to look up tabs for, or watch the video really close to see what the drummer does.

What I sometimes like to do to keep myself "sharp" is tune in on a good (sound)quality FM station and try to drum along to the songs they are playing.
You can select the station on the basis of your preference for a certain music style, or (which I do) select something entirely different.
I find it keeps you flexible in body and mind.

Cheers and Happy Drumming, Harry

Re: help in playing the drums

First have you gone through correct sticks handling & grip ? Then have works on basic rudiments ? Like single strokes rolls, double strokes roll, paradiddle, triplet & flams ?

Dom Famularo Drumset Lesson Series

40 Essential Rudiments

Table of Drum Rudiments

Now if your answer is yes then began working on slow rock basic 4/4 beat and start the counting process.

here's something to help at first.

WEB THUMPER'S FREE DRUM LESSONS

LESSONS LIST

Now that you have take time practice and overview the drummig technique then you can go for something simple or basic like any beatle song, Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi... Listen to the song, play along in your head, feel the music and where the drummer want to bring the listener. Analyse the form and tempo. Sit behind the kit and play.

Good luck

Re: help in playing the drums

One thing I highly recommend(if at all possible) is to get together with some other musicians and play together. You can start with a simple song. Get some chord/lyrics charts off of the internet and just start with a basic 1/8 beat on the hats, kick on the 1 and 3 beats and snare on the 2 and 4 beats. Do your best to listen, even making extra effort to play quieter (quieter as a whole band) and get your timing together with the bass player if you have one. Make changes in the level of volume you play the song at(soft during one verse, medium during a chorus, loud on another verse) and rehearse the songs at different tempo's to see if you can still play tightly together.
I'm in no way a professional, but playing in a group is the best things for advancing my ability. You still need to practice the rudiments though.

Eric
p.s. save up for lessons or video lessons if you can(some of Dave Weckl's evolution video's are pretty helpful - not sure of the title) or ask for them for christmas or birthday presents.

Re: help in playing the drums

Lessons are the best way to go,also you want to be a well rounded drummer,so learn to read
then when the time comes you can play any style.I started inJ.R. High and learned my Rudiments then i started playing to the police some of there music was basic drum so i played
along with the song.I learned in your spare time get a pillow and play on it. practice your rud's
on the pillow it will help you get better,REMEMBER TO START OFF SLOW AND GET IT RIGHT,SPEED WILL COME LATTER.START WITH YOUR BASIC FIVE STROKE (RR LL R) How i remembered it is a little saying i came up with>>>("She got baby socks") SHE= 1 R GOT=2R
BA=1L BY=2L SOCKS=R COUNT IT IT'S 5 FIVE STROKE. WELL THAT'S ENOUGH FOR NOW GET THAT DOWN GOOD AND YOU WILL BE OWN YOUR WAY.Oh on the set find five surfaces start with the snare, and go from there just 5 strokes around the surface of the drums on the kit,
remember to add the base(kick) drum also. Just basic drumming from me to you. Enjoy
