Left Handed Drummer!

I'm a lefty and have always had trouble following the "correct" way around a kit Anyway, are there other lefty drummers who set their kit up reversed with the hihat on the right along with the snare? Please tell me I'm not the only one!

Re: Left Handed Drummer!

Not a leftie myself but we have a couple of local drummers who are and set their kits up with hat/ snare on the right... tried it once and have a greater appreciation for trying to do things backwards Nice thing about drums, they're Ambidextrous (did I really spell that right?)

I'm a righty myself. But I have done it before. It really confuses me, I love it.

Re: Left Handed Drummer!

i am left handed and i learnt to play the guitar left handed , i could never play other peoples guitars .so when i learned to play drums i decided i would do it right handed and it wasnt a problem for me luckely....there are no rules to how you set up your drums you just do what feels good for you. experiment, thats one of the beaut things about drums they can be and are as individual as you are

Re: Left Handed Drummer!

Im also a lefty, but i play both guitar and drums right-handed. It wasnt really a problem for me, but the only downside for my drumming is that my left becomes the dominant hand and the right becomes the weak hand. A lot of the fills and hits would sometimes feel wierd. Especially on some stick patterns.

I agree with the above posters...
There isn't really a "correct" method other than what is most comfortable for you.

My recommendation...
Get one or two friends that are capable of adjusting the drums while you sit.
Get into your chair, adjust it to make it feel right, and then air drum for a min or two. Move your limbs around (left/right/forward/back/seat up/seat down) and then starting with the bass drum or hi-hat move it to the comfortable positions that your legs end up at.

Once both of those are done add the snare then toms. Get as close as you can to moving the drums into comfortable positions. Do them one at a time until you have everything in place. Doing this will get you that "correct" way you are looking for. Once your drums are all set into nice positions figure out some way to mark this.... magic marker, tape, memory locks, carpet marked with tape or marker.

Once you are all set up and marked appropriately drum until you pass out. Then give the teardown/setup a test drive. That way you can see how quickly you can get your drums up and running. Since you have everything marked there should be no question as to which drum goes where.

Go pound some skins
