I agree with the above posters...
There isn't really a "correct" method other than what is most comfortable for you.
My recommendation...
Get one or two friends that are capable of adjusting the drums while you sit.
Get into your chair, adjust it to make it feel right, and then air drum for a min or two. Move your limbs around (left/right/forward/back/seat up/seat down) and then starting with the bass drum or hi-hat move it to the comfortable positions that your legs end up at.
Once both of those are done add the snare then toms. Get as close as you can to moving the drums into comfortable positions. Do them one at a time until you have everything in place. Doing this will get you that "correct" way you are looking for. Once your drums are all set into nice positions figure out some way to mark this.... magic marker, tape, memory locks, carpet marked with tape or marker.
Once you are all set up and marked appropriately drum until you pass out. Then give the teardown/setup a test drive. That way you can see how quickly you can get your drums up and running. Since you have everything marked there should be no question as to which drum goes where.
