Question For Other Veteran Drummers

I bought a great double tom, floor tom bass vintage Slingerland drum kit today. The 16" floor tom is unbelievable. It has a beautiful deep resonance. The problem is the bass sounds High and flat instead of deep and resonant. I have always had the best of drums and have played since I was 3. I have never had this problem even remotely. I have loosened the heads all I can. Anyone have a clue? I never muffle my bass other than Aquarius Super Kick 1 Bass Heads, so it is not over muffled. The head on there is a Remo Ambassador

Re: Question For Other Veteran Drummers

After playing the bass today I am thinking it is the old head is dead so it robs the drum of any resonance. It just does not sound as deep as a bass should be.

Re: Question For Other Veteran Drummers

What size is the drum height and depth please.
Do you know what the shell is made of?
How many ply and what type of wood if you know.

Thanks

Re: Question For Other Veteran Drummers

Has the reso head got a big hole? anything bigger than about 8 inches on a 22" Bass will make the reso head all but useless. If you want deep punch, I believe you should damp the batter by about 15% of its height. If you want to maintain and project some of the timbre, I think it's best to damp only the reso head, which should be tuned slightly higher than the batter. That's my system anyway - I'm no expert, but I know the sound I like!

Re: Question For Other Veteran Drummers

My recommendation would be to replace the heads. If you get an idea as to how you want the drum to sound you can isolate what type of heads you need. Here are a few things that I believe should help if you don’t already know.

The batter side head is what provides you the feel, attack, and tone in a projected burst. Anything you put here will aid in changing the sound of the drum’s attack.

The resonant head is VERY important to making your drum sound good. Yes there are concert toms, but unless you are looking for that specific sound, resonant heads impact tone, pitch, sustain, overtones. Remember the resonant head vibrates and projects from sticks/beaters hitting the batter head. In most cases 1 ply heads are used on the resonate head, but if you feel like trying 2 ply here go right ahead. Two ply heads mute overtones and that kind of takes away from the purpose of the resonant head. Just like Bambam stated… once that air hole gets too big you might as well scrap that resonant head. I have seen musicians who feel they need more air to escape the bass drum have two smaller holes cut in the resonant bass head instead of one large one.

Drum diameter gives you pitch
Drum depth gives you sustain and resonance
Thick shells give you more qualities of the batter head
Thin shells give you more of the resonant head qualities

So… take a moment and get to know your drum as far as what you can expect out of it. Then select your heads based on what kind of qualities the drum will bring you.

If you replace the heads a thicker head (like Attack two ply) will give lower response, also by tuning the batter side higher than the resonant side will lower the tone (resonant side almost wrinkled).... this might be something for you to try.

Re: Question For Other Veteran Drummers

Thanks for the input. It was the head. The other one was older and dented in places so I should have known. I favor the Aquarian Super Kick 1 heads for bass personally. They are the best I have ever used. It has more attack and elimanates the need for any kind of muffler. I did use Evans Oil two ply heads when they first came out and loved them. When I was with Alabama Evans furnished Mark Herndon with oil heads as endorsement heads, so we had many of their newest innovations before the general public had them. I loved them. Rogers was our drum endorsement. The Rogers we had were hand made in Rogers Arkansas. We had sever kits they sent Mark but soon after they started making what I feel is inferrior drums. The vintage 70s Rogers with the small R are great drums. The ones with the big R stay away from. They just do not have the attack or quality.
On the rest of my drums I like the Remo Ambassadors, and on my snare I use Remo Coated Emperors. I guess my main problem was I am so used to Aquarian Super Kicks that nothing else sounded right. It was a Remo Emperor that came on the bass.
