Re: Fills Help Fills are a chance for a drummer to pull something tasty out of his/her pocket.
Whenever you choose to drop a fill try to make it appropriate for the music.
More often than not you will find that fills are improvised by drummers. Unless they practice strict dicipline keeping fills roughly the same from show to show like Neil Peart would, the drummer would be throwing something out from the top of his/her head.
My recommendation is to pick a drum beat that you can play steady and then record yourself playing to a song or metronome. Focus not on how wonderful a fill you can make but rather on how well you can keep the beat going. I recommend a metronome over a song though. Just focus on repeating four measures of four and then add the fill in the fourth measure.
Think in your head
1 2 3 4 2 2 3 4 3 2 3 4 4 2 3 fill (rinse and repeat)
or switch it up by adding more "Fill" time
1 2 3 4 2 2 3 4 3 2 3 4 4 2 fill fill (rinse and repeat)
Remeber since you are still kinda new try to focus on time and not the most advanced fill. Feel free to challenge yourself and think out of the box... but if there is a fill that you know you can play by heart, but the tempo is too fast, slow the tempo down and practice getting that fill up to speed.
sometimes the best fill isn't a blast of toms but a single smoking rimshot in the right place.
The point is keep the time going, don't worry about messing up, and just keep having fun and throwing out new stuff. Challenge yourself. Drop the hand from the hi-hat and do the same beats on the floor tom for your fill.
I hope this helps. I used this for years which taught me my most treasured quality in drumming... Improvisation.
Happy drumming.
A drummer's job is to keep time. If you can make wonderful fills but not get back into the pocket of the rhythm you will never gig or play out. Keeping the beat, the feel, the time is WAY more important than fills. |
