Ideal learning videos and books for 8 year old

Hi, just joined this forum. About 2 weeks ago my wife and son and I went to visit a friend of my wife's. Turns out her friend's boyfriend has a drum set, keyboards and guitars. My son walked over to the drum set (never seen one before) and just started playing, keeping a beat to the guy's guitar playing. Afterwards he played around with the rest of the set and started doing solos.

We had considered putting him in guitar lessons this summer, but he says he really wants to learn the drums. So we've signed him up for lessons and I bought him a practice pad and sticks (promark). I used to play drums in highschool but that was many years ago and I played far better by ear than reading sheet music.

What are considered the best 'from the ground up' learning videos and books? I wouldn't mind learning along with him and practicing together. I'm currently looking for a used drum set locally to buy him that we can both use. Thanks.

This depends on what you and he are looking for. You have taken great steps by getting him
a teacher... The only point that I would ensure you drive to him is to find what works. You could practice a roll for two hours a day and kill all interest in drumming... or try to bring the point across that there are way too many variables involved in drumming. Choice of head/stick/etc... what ends up working for you may not work for him.

Hit up sites like Evans... they have a link to a wealth of drum videos, or drummersworld, etc...
Look at many different drummers and many different styles. A teacher can help bring together the basics of drumming... but so can a trip to a local music store where real drummers sell kits.

Don't forget that just because you don't have sticks doesn't mean you can't practice... jamming in the car on the dashboard, or bass drum hits under your desk at work/school...

If you need some guidance I would suggest getting the book "stick control" There are tons of great exercises that can be used for snare/bass/whatever.

Key here is experiment!!!!!

Another cool project is to build the snare drum. Places like drummaker.com sell Keller shells and will even do the edges/holes. Then it is basically picking out hardware and attaching it all together. This is a great method to getting a nice sounding drum at minimal cost.

At the suggestion of some people I picked up the Carmine Appice Ultimate Realistic Rock drum book. It's ok, but only comes with 2 CDs. I just found out there's a newer version with 2 DVDs and 2 CDs. I find I learn much more quickly (and can help my son better) by seeing stuff done visually first, then I can understand the written page.

Is the 2 DVD set worth getting? Do they cover most of the exercises in the book like the 2 CDs?
