How often do you return your Snare

The batter head on my snare seems to need to be retightened every couple of days. I've gotten pretty quick at retuning it, but is this normal? Will any of the devices like those things that go on the lugs work to keep the drum in tune longer. I've also seen adds for lugs that are supposed to hold tune longer, any one used these?

Doesn't sound normal to me. I've had an old Yamaha snare that's had the same batter head on it for 6 years and never really gave me hell. Maybe you should look into getting a new head for it?

If the drum has not had a new head on it in the last year I would change the head right now. I have heard of some people having issues with lugs getting loose after being played, but I have not had that problem.

You can always get lug locks if you continue to have problems

Re: How often do you return your Snare

Is it possible that the shell is warped? I had an old garage-sale Gretsch when I was younger, and that thing was warped as all hell and constantly had to be cranked on to stay at a reasonable pitch. I also remember from marching band in HS that some dumbarse played on the shell when there was no hoop or head on it, and that drum never kept its head seated correctly for the rest of eternity.

In short, check for shell warp or damage. May not be the culprit, but it may be also.

parkerdj has a good point, but feel that I should add...

The snare I was talking about is a metal shell. It sounds like parkerdj might be talking about a wood shell.

I don't think the shell is warped, I guess the first thing to do is as suggested try a new head. This hasn't always required this much tuning so maybe the head is just wearing out. Thanks for the input.

Re: How often do you return your Snare

If you rimshot a lot like me you have to...just a given, you hit, rim dips down a bit, lug has some wiggle room and yea, loosens itself ever so slowly. I know the head on my snare right now is probably 3 years old, love the sound of it though..lol, a worn out yamaha head Only area my snare loosens though is the 1/4 of the rim that faces me/where I rim shot.
Same thing happens to our marching snares at school, after a few performances I have to lightly tighten my batter head.
