Independence

I am a lefty and I am starting to work on my independence.
with my left hand which is my hihat I am doing 8notes with my right hand I am doing 16notes and 1&3 on the bass drum.
Just got this lesson from my teacher last night.
for me it is not easy yet. The idea is for me to start working on 16s on the bass drum as well mixing it up with the snare.

Re: Independence

Hello sir! I'm all about the Jim Chapin Book, Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer: VOL. 1

The whole book is devoted to Coordinated independence; it doesn't really give things to the reader as left or right really, just as parts. It's quite delicious material! I finished it in early May of last year and I still use it for warm ups and workouts.

Also, I believe you and I have the same shells! Pearl Session Studio? Birch? Fusion?

Oh yeah!!!

Re: Independence

well, i think you should get your snare, hi-hat and bass, then you get your 16th notes in on bass after you get it.

Sean, we have a couple of things in common, I'm working a lot on the Chapin book myself, and I also really like the sound of my birch drums.

I've found that by using the Chapin method, I'm able to keep a steady ride pattern, while incorporating the different left hand beats to make much more interesting Jazz beats. It's definately improved the independence of my left hand, and has allowed to to get away from just playing backbeats all the time.

Re: Independence

That's great to hear! Keep at it... and just wait until you reach the stuff that incorporates the bass drum into the whole mix too. You'll be really surprised at some of the ideas you find yourself playing after gaining that additional independence.
