Re: Electronic Drums

I'd take acoustic over electric any day...every day. Electric sets are good for producers or people that want different sounds other than ...well the acoustic sounds And if you want something good be willing to drop $1k easy I would say,

Re: Electronic Drums

I own a set of Roland V-Drums - and I have to say that I think they are great... for certain situations.

I've played in heaps of cover bands, and electronics are excellent for that - because you can go in, plug straight into the sound desk and you'll get a pretty decent sound every time. With Acoustic drums there are much more complicated stuff to deal with that you need a good sound guy to look after. So if you're playing in a cover band I highly recommend them.

If I was playing Jazz or Acoustic music at all... then I'd steer well clear of them. I also didn't find them great for teaching on, because I couldn't get the students to produce a good sound, and they were fundamentally different from what the student was practicing on at home, so that made it difficult.

Re: Electronic Drums

The only advantage of an electronic drum set is that you can change what it sounds like.
The disadvantages are that if you play for a while your writs can hurt and the cymbals don't sound as good. It also doesn't look as cool.

Re: Electronic Drums

I own an acoustic set myself, but I play bass for a group where the drummer has an electronic set, and there are a couple of advantages to the Electronic set. The most desirable advantage of the electronic set is the volume control. When playing in smaller venues or practicing at home it is nice to be able to just turn the volume knob down. The other advantage, the electronic set packs up into a smaller space, and is easier to transport.

I like the feel and sound of an acoustic set, but there are some situations where an electronic set works very well.
