The Rumor Weed

I thought this might be a great way to challenge some of the stuff we hear in the drumming community. You know the type of “Do it this way!” stuff you tend to shun off because things work well the way they are. Things you would feel more comfortable either having someone else do with their own kit. I will start with an example of something I have been thinking about.

One recommendation for timpani is to use paraffin or candle wax to place a light coating around the bearing edge. This allows the head to move more easily. I would think this might even the bearing edge surface as well creating a nice even tone… either that or it could change the sound by increasing the surface area of what touches the drum head.

Thoughts?

I think it's a little risky. If you do it wrong, you could dammage your head and have to get a new one. But i think it would reduce buzzing, and create a even tone if placed within 1.5 in. from the rim and evenly.
