Marching band snare?

I have a 13x5.5 Yamaha Stage Custom snare and I want to know how I could make the sound similar to those military marching band snares like the one I hear on some recordings.

What parts do I need to replace and is there a special technique to make it sound so sustained.

Thanks!

Re: Marching band snare?

haah, well...kevlar head quite a few ply's, not steel snares :P Only thing I can think of, without changing anything, get the batter head tight, tighten up the reso a little more thn normal and just tighten the snares from there. Don't over tighten the batter though or else you'll just get crap for sound. But really, the difference between 2 ply "plastic" heads and kevlar/woven heads is quite a difference and can't really be equal/sound the same.

OK, I just heard the marching band snares and nope, that's not the sound I wanted, it's more like the snare solos of Buddy Rich. I don't know how to get that tone.

I agree with shazaam, and i think you will get the same(or close to it) Buddy Rich sound that way.
