Overtones when tuning. Any clue what I"m doing wrong?

I've watched videos, read tutorials, everything I can think of, and I'm having trouble getting a good sound. Most of the time I'm getting over tones. Even on my snare, I'm in my living room and just got a new head. Tuned it, following a video and reading the aquarian guide. Seemed pretty straight forward. The snare itself sounds good (When I hear the snares vibrate) but I hear a low *doing in a high pitch. I hear it when I've tuned my toms in the past. Any clue where I'm going wrong? I'm going in a start pattern, and being carefull about tuning them evenly.

Thanks

Oh, had my first lesson today and glad I went. I'm basically starting over and learning the moeller method of hitting, I keep reverting back at times, and he has me playing heel up, so it threw me off quite abit.

Two cents worth. Have your bearing edges checked by a local pro Drum Shope/maker. Try tensioning bottom heads looser than top's.Install new bottom head's. Maybe add a couple cotton ball's in tom's.

Thanks I'll check that link out. Ended up calling into work today *cough* *cough* can't you see I'm sick? I will get the tuned today. Its wierd though. My snare has a nice pop to it, but that harmoninc, overtone, whatever it is takes away from it. With my old, cheap, came with the snare head I didn't have this.

*Edit* so far I go my toms sounding pretty good with that guide, about to tackled the bass drum. Still havn't figured out the *ping* sound on my snare. I've played around with the tension on the snare, loosened and tightened the batter side. I think I have the resonent sight on right, it feels firm.

It's not that your tuning it wrong (the star shape and all) i think you're just aiming to high or low which creates a buzzing. an easy and cheap way to prevent this is to buy some E-rings. they are made by evens and you just place them on and it improves the tune and reduces or eliminates buzzing completely.

Moon gel works too. I have a piece on everything but my bass drum. 8", 10", 12" 16" toms and 14X5.5 snare. Tap the head with your stick and lightly follow around the lug nuts about an inch in from the edge. When you find the spot, drop a piece of moon gel there. Works for me and tuning is an art that drives even seasoned pros to the local loony bin........Good luck!
