Bass Drum Help

Hello, I've played the drums off on for a while now but I still don't know that much about them. I've just recently began to play more seriously

My problem is is that my bass drum is quiet and seems to damp, if i take the sheet out then i think it has too long of a ring

[I've raised the beater higher so that it can hit harder to make it louder and its kind of messing up my timeing but thats the only thing ive tried]

any tips

any insults

any ideas?

peace
me

Re: Bass Drum Help

If the problem is too much ringing when you take out the dampening, one way to reduce the ring, without greatly reducing the volume is to put a port in the resonating head. You can buy rings that reinforce the port hole, and it's pretty easy to take the head off and cut the hole with an exacto knife. If you don't want to cut a hole in the resonating head try dampening only the resonating head. You can buy a bass drum head with a dampaning ring, or roll up a towel and put it just against the reso head. It is easier to play with the amount of dampaning if you cut the port, then you don't have to take the head off everytime you want to adjust the dampening.

Re: Bass Drum Help

My basic advice would be:
If you want more thud, damp the reso head, if you want more tone, damp the batter head. In any event, try and get the beater to hit the exact centre of the head, and if you do cut a hole in the reso, it shouldn't be bigger than 15% of the total head size, otherwise the reso may as well not be there at all.. Then it's all down to tuning, drum size and type of wood. At least, that's what I think!! Experiment - and have FUN!

Re: Bass Drum Help

What brand, material and size bass drum do you have? What is the material of your beater, and where on the head does it hit. Also, where is your heel when you push on your bass drum pedal? My son who is just learning plants his heel on the pedal. He therefor gets no volume, control, feel, or sweetspot. Let us know what you do. (I stick a hockey puck under his heel to help him learn to raise it. He gets more control).

I have a Yamaha SC with no hole in the reso side and a 4 foot long body pillow folded in half so it touches both heads equally and my bass drum, though muffled with a nice wet punch, it shakes the house. It's a 22" with stock Yamaha (Remo) heads and a stock felt beater. Let us know what you have and we might help you acheive what your looking for.

Re: Bass Drum Help

My suggection is get a new head (or set of heads) Like an Aquairian Superkick I, That type of head has a muffling ring built into them and you do not need a pillow or blanket in the kick. I have a 24" Maple kick and I use nothing inside of it and do not have any ringing problems.

New heads work wonders

Re: Bass Drum Help

Heres the setup I use for my bass. It's good and loud, has lots of attack (Very metal!) and has a nice thud to it. I have an Evans Emad 1-ply with the thinner dampining ring on the batter side, and a Remo Powerstroke resonant on the reso sode with an 8" hole cut on the bottom. I also have a Remo double beater patch on the batter head, and use the plastic side of the beater.
