Wondering what heel-toe technique is.

Today I sat in front of the drums (Actually just taking a break) and thought about what my instructor told me about playing fast repeated hits on the bass. Hes having me play heel up, and we havn't gotten to anything quick so it hasn't come up. Me on the other hand, drum for at least 2 hours a day, and play stuff with fast bass beats at home (And I"ve only had 2 lessons)

Anyways, I just started getting used to heel up after playing heel down, and started practicing how he taught me to do. He told me when I bring my leg up, I hit with the front part of the foot then come down with my leg. So its only one up and down motion with my leg for 2 hits. Getting into a rhythm of 16 notes has been tricky. I can do 3 in a row no problem, at slower speeds, but continuously my leg eventually starts moving all over the foot pedal..

I've heard alot of benifits to learnng heel-toe, but its a pain to learn. Would be nice if thats what I"m learning now when I'm just learning the drums (less habits to break from)

heal-toe is exactly what it sounds like. what you do is basically bounce your leg up and down making it so that your heal hits the peddle, then on your way up you tap your toe so that it hits the peddle. it should create a rocking motion.

one tip is that it is heal, heal, toe , toe.

you can also check out some videos on youtube or something like that.

Thank you Just got done checkng out a video in the message saw after posting this. Was able to see it much clearer and know what to practice better now.

I do have a question though since I don't have a lesson till tuesday. When I come down, its still like normal heel up where my toe is actually making most the contact for the beater to move (As in, I don't just hit the pedal with my heel. I come down with my foot, but the orentation of it is going to cause my toe to have most of the force on the pedal)

no, it's more of a flat foot. because when you heal makes contact thats when it should hit. if that makes sense.

It's a technique that I have learned and mastered on my right foot for fast double and triplet. I'm now in the process to mastering it on my double pedal.

Derrick Pope offer a good expanation of the technique.
