Re: Begginer metal head!

Umm...well you'll want double bass obviously from the start. If you only have 6-700 for everything...a pulse pro I think they are for $500 about...pdp's or gibraltars double pedal and planet z's or meinl hcs for cymbals I guess. That'd be $700+ I think right there. If you're just looking to put 6-700 into the shells pdp x7 no doubt and a double pedal. Lotta toms to play/start with and'll give you room for cannibals fills.
hope that helps ya a bit/

Re: Begginer metal head!

key elements to metal drumming, know your blast beats, be really fast, lots of cymbals and in particular splashes come in really useful, also get very fast with your double bass. i recomend practicing slowly with doubles, paradiddles and changing the leading foot to fine tune your double pedal playing.
also if possible set your kit out with the first two toms directly behind your snare. then your third tom off to the right. lots of metal drummers use this as its faster to navigate.

hope that helps

Re: Begginer metal head!

Don't get sucked into the more is better philosophy.
If you can get away with less drums you will save yourself in the future.

Think about it... every time you add a drum you gain two new heads to purchase. That can drive the cost of head replacements up rather quickly.

If you can find a quality four or five piece kit... four piece kits are rare to find... stick with that. I have a Pacific 602 pedal which is nice for starting on. For cymbals stick with the packs that stores offer... you will get a better deal... Oh and don't be afraid to buy used cymbals. I bought many a cymbal for 1/3 of the price simply because it was used.

20" crash/ride Zildjian for $100
17" Zildjian crash for $90
13" Sabian medium crash for I think $60

Just keep your eyes open.

Re: Begginer metal head!

My used cymbals:
14" crash $100(now use it as a hi-hat)
Current ride $70(i also crash, buy a pingie ride)
18" crash $40(I had a friend who worked in the drum department)
16" crash $100(Daddys junkie music, they dont know drumming at all)
other 18" $150(bought it from a friend, he needed the money, cracked, but sounded great, I still play it, it also help me found "my sound")
14" hi hats $60(sound jazzie I use em for punk, they ad another cymbal brand to my kit)
17" crash $60(adds another brand)
14" hats, new but friend sold them
9.5" zil bell $50(ping)
22" china $200(i'm thinking of buying this, they sell for over 400 online)

Used drums:
Yes Dave Matthew's drummer uses a similar kit...
Yamaha recording custom, I bought it for $500, A bit rusty, used about $200 at the most to get new hardware(my drum mentor from the shop gave me some of his own unneeded yamaha equipment)

I have broken it into a 13 16" tomed kit (punk/rock use mostly)
also I use the rest of the tome as a fusion(10 12 14")... like lastditch(an old forum member skinslapper will remember, Metal!)

If it comes with heads the tops will occupy you for a wile untill you need to buy more, one pair of bottom heads can be played for years!

P.S. if your having trubble figguring this out, pm me and ill pm me and ill try and pm you in a week. thank you, hope you can read this!

Holy crap drums can get expensive fast! Lots of good advice already so I wont be to long. Don't be above the used stuff. Used stuff is great. I picked up a used Mapex Pro-M (Maple) kit in fusion sizes for $500. Its typically a $1200 kit. Hardware is good to get used too. You Can usually get quality used cymbal stands for about $40.

Re: Begginer metal head!

yeah my 7 piece would have cost around 3 times the cost if I didn't buy it used, it still sounds great( the seller wanted to buy Axis pedals, and had another kit)!

Re: Begginer metal head!

i use tama 70's swingstar that i bought from a jamming studio..it's in the storeroom for nearly 4 years and still sound great..of course, have to replace many of the parts..i tink it's good to have a used drum for a start..but, that's my opinon bro..hehehee...u can explore it first. try to bang the used drum (maybe from a jamm studio or a fren's set) n also try the new one..definitely, one of those will catch ur heart..
