I'm a fairy new drummer and am pretty basic as well, but as for keeping a steady rhythm, try using snare or base to hit the main beats, or every other beat, or something and always hit that beat so you stay at the same pace. so on the large
pulses hit the bass drum then add in other drums where you want, but be sure to keep that beat and have things that match. but as long as you give a bass on i'd say notes 1 & 3 in the measure (1-2-3-4) it will help you stay on beat.
when you add more beats, try to keep them in alignment + rhythm. If you are familiar with reading music or have taken any class and know the counting like "one and two and three and four and.." etc, that cuts 4ths to 8ths. 8ths can be broken to 16th and so on, but try to only hit on the 4ths,8ths,16ths,etc. beats because if there are stray notes not falling in that rhythm it will sound off.
Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that though, but for beginners I think its a fairly easy way to learn to keep a steady rhythm. Once you have the feel for it you will develop your sense of a steady pace and be able to fill in more, adding more notes, but to stay at the same speed, keep it simple then add.
This was probably very confusing.
