Re: how to create a drum rythm

First, if you just start playing drum, my advise would to get a good teacher, he will help you with the basic & fundamental understanding of rhythm & drumset playing.

Second, listen and play along to as much of different style of music as you can. With time you will, with the help of a teacher & serious practice, improve your skills and get better & better.

Good luck and welcome aboard.

Have an artistic mind to start. Umm, can't help you with rythm except get a metronome to start and keep a steady pulse but don't rely on it. Have an imagination...play what you feel sounds good and flows well.
If you're looking how to blend stuff together so it flows, listen to music you like and play with the drummer if there is one. If not, make stuff up.

Re: how to create a drum rythm

Feel the pulse of the song within you... there is a certain flow, like a heart beat, that happens. If you must then use the bass drum to carry this pulse, or the ride, or the hi-hat... something. Once you have the pulse and FEEL it you can play with it, around it, ahead of it, behind it... etc...

It takes practice and time. You learn when to fill by learning music theory. I suggest listening to all kinds of music... and I mean ALL kinds for inspiration. But if you want to learn some good groove playing, fills, and style then I suggest picking up Led Zeppelin. Playing to John Bonham will teach you how to groove nicely.

Oh and I recommend NOT listening to the guitarist too much.. listen to your counterpart - the bassist.

Funny enought I have brought myself up to a point where I never listen to the lyrics of a song. I couldn't even tell you the words to the songs I have listened to hundreds of times. I always focus on the tones behind what they are saying and the feeling behind the words. It's like listening to triggers in all the instruments and playing off them

Re: how to create a drum rythm

I'm a fairy new drummer and am pretty basic as well, but as for keeping a steady rhythm, try using snare or base to hit the main beats, or every other beat, or something and always hit that beat so you stay at the same pace. so on the large pulses hit the bass drum then add in other drums where you want, but be sure to keep that beat and have things that match. but as long as you give a bass on i'd say notes 1 & 3 in the measure (1-2-3-4) it will help you stay on beat.

when you add more beats, try to keep them in alignment + rhythm. If you are familiar with reading music or have taken any class and know the counting like "one and two and three and four and.." etc, that cuts 4ths to 8ths. 8ths can be broken to 16th and so on, but try to only hit on the 4ths,8ths,16ths,etc. beats because if there are stray notes not falling in that rhythm it will sound off.

Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that though, but for beginners I think its a fairly easy way to learn to keep a steady rhythm. Once you have the feel for it you will develop your sense of a steady pace and be able to fill in more, adding more notes, but to stay at the same speed, keep it simple then add.

This was probably very confusing.

If you have a Nintendo wii, I thoroughly recomend purchasing Wii music. If gives these great lessons for begginer drummers including instruction improvisation and style variation. it's geeky, but well worth it if you're finding your feet.

Re: how to create a drum rythm

Unfortunately teaching feel is difficult. You literally need to "feel" ryhthms to play them on the fly. I generally play to the music on original tunes--I try to fill a pocket that I can sense needs filling to make the music move rhythmically. Sometimes the strum pattern of the guitar or the bass line will give you all the information you need for it, other times you will have to sense where to play based on intuition and experience.

That all being said, it really comes with time and practice--experience. And, like others have said here, you have to listen--a lot. Listen to as much music as you can get your hands on and try to see what the drummers are doing to fill the pocket. And remember---there are times NOT to play as well, to let the music breathe--the whole less is more approach, it works...

Unless you're a metal drummer doing lots of blast stuff-- then the less is more thing is out the window lol...
