Buying drums - help needed!

Hi!

Im new to drumming, been playing this summer only. Im playing with a friend who's a more experienced guitar player and singer. so it works with us to. I've borrowed his set for a while, a crap one, its like playing on a set of garbage cans.

Anyways, im getting better so obviously i'd like to get my own, and a better one. Im looking at used once. And on saturday I will meet a guy and see on his drums.

Its a Pearl Target set. I dont know the words for specs that comes under, sorry:
Snare 13"
Bass 18"
Tom 1 10"
Tom 2 12"
floor tom 14"
Hihat ?"
B8 Thin crash 16" sabian

This i get for 566$, its new skin on the drums as it counts for something

(For 200$ extra i can get a Sabian B8 ride cymbal also)

My question really is;
Is this a good beginners set? Should I also take the ride cymbal for the 200$ extra? If you got anything else on mind regarding the set i'd like to hear it, im all open for learning!

Regards,
Alex

A brand new B8 Ride cymbal from musician's friend, depending on the size, are less than $120, so $200 extra for that is way too much.

As for the set itself, looking around the internet I'm seeing them anywhere from $500 - $800 new so that's gonna be a judgement call on your part.

check outMusician's Friend - Buy musical instruments, music gear, musical equipment online they usually have some great deals.

Good Luck

Buying drums is a mine field, there are so many things to consider:
Budget
Make and model
Number of drums
Style of music you play
Finishes
Skins
Cymbals
Electronic/ Acoustic
Over all size of kit- no use buying an 11 piece monster kit if you want to play small jazz clubs

The golden rule is Try Before You Buy.

Good luck.

Budget - 500 - 750 i guess
Make and model - I guess i want something a bit known, Pearl is an example.
Number of drums - Snare, crash+ride cymbal, 2xtom tom, floor tom,Hihat and bass
Style of music you play - Rock, not hardcore rock but rock
Finishes - Dont know what that means im new
Skins - No clue what i like here neither
Cymbals - No preferences - something good hehe
Electronic/ Acoustic - Acoustic

Does anybody here know what it will cost in shipping if i buy a 5-piece set from ebay (the U.S) ? its alot of OK 5 piece sets there that cots 300$ but im from Norway so i wonder what the shipping cost will be... Answers, even just thought is highly appriciated.

Re: Buying drums - help needed!

Over-all it may be a good beginner set.

The one item / drum I personally would be concerned about is the 18" bass drum - and that really depends on the type of music you will be playing and the depth (18"x14" weak, 18"x16" to 22" a cannon). Many good jazz drummers use small but deep bass drums.

I agree with a post that $200 extra sounds steep for that additional cymbal - see: SameDayMusic.com: Sabian B8 20-in Ride

Re: Buying drums - help needed!

By 'Finishes' I mean how the drums actually look- bare wood, stained or varnished,
or wrapped with a customised finish ( eg Animal Custom Drums).

New drums are often suppiled with stock heads which are OK for an absolute beginner but will not offer the best performance and sound from the drum.
A good quality top skin, ( batter head) such as Remo, Evans or Aquarian combined with a resonant head of the same maker will give the optimum sound and duarbility from your drum.
It is imperative that each drum is then tuned correctly. there must be a tuning guide on Drumset Connect somewhere..

Not sure about shipping costs. My best guess is for shipping from the US to Norway is that UPS will be the best option. You can down load this : UPS Widget - select a country
this will help you track your delivery and offer some guarantees on delivery date and offer some feedback if you are not happy upon receipt.

for the price you are looking to spend you might be better off looking at used. not that you can't get a decent kit for that price you might be able to get a used kit of better quality. besides whats a good kit is relative to the player. witht he right tuning and heads you can make a very mediocre kit sound good.. good luck and have fun..

Re: Buying drums - help needed!

I was thinking about the used route myself when I initially read the post. I picked up a really good DW Pacific CX Kit for the local High School for $250 (just the drums - no stands). There are really is no CraigsList posts for Norway, but maybe search the local papers and musician publications - parents buy drums for kids all the time (good kits) then turn around and sell them when little Johnny or Sally looses interest.

Musical instruments are like cars, the value drops 20% or more when they walk out of the store.
