Learning resources - Which is more effective? What do you learn better from - a DVD/something visual, or a book or something similar?
Personally I think they both have their advantages - with the book/sheet music or whatever you can see what you're doing and where everything fits in, but with a DVD etc. you can see the person playing it, what it should look like, and hear what it should sound like.
Which do you prefer? |

Re: Learning resources - Which is more effective? Either really...I really like using Vic Firth's Rudiment page on their website...well, anything on their website really!
And as for books, Bill Bachman has popped out some great stuff.

Re: Learning resources - Which is more effective? Audio and Visual always worked for me. Can't read music and never will.
Been doing it that way for over 50 years now.
My son is the opposite, he can't play to it without the sheets or tabs.
Different rolls for different drummers I guess. |

Re: Learning resources - Which is more effective? Well when i first started taking lessons i was introduced with sheet music. This helped a lot because i learned how to subdivide the beat and it gave me a very good sense of rhythm. When learning something new on set, like a new style or exercise, it helps to have someone play it as well as having the piece of music in front of you for you to see. Once i hear something it is easier to make sense of what i see on the music, that is if the piece of music is difficult to read itself. I think it is important to hear what you are trying to play at ALL TEMPOS especially slow although hearing it at a quick pace helps as well. |
