Increasing bass drum resonance

Just a curious question...
I play on one of the drumframes that suspends the whole kit. My bass drum sounds
killer this way.

My thought was on the fact you can help your floor tom sound by adding additional
rubber (like a mouse pad) under the floor tom feet to make it sing better.
So if you did the same for the bass drum legs and bass drum pedal, would it improve
the sound of your bass drum? If it does a significant increase in resonance it might be a cheap way to improve your bass drum sound.

Yes CJ your idea does work. I have a 14" X 20" kick drum and I need all the help I can get to make it sound big! I raised the front of the drum up about a 1/4" off the ground by extending the legs and I put a thin pad of packaging foam under the pedal -- just thick enough to have the desired effect, but not so thick that it places my foot/leg in an awkward position.

I have to experiment more, maybe by getting a firmer pad and by putting some under the front of the drum too, because right now the drum rocks back and forth a bit. It's an old Slingerland with the legs close to the middle of the drum so it's not really made for this kind of adjustment. I don't have any toms mounted on it (again, to make it sing better) so the rocking isn't really hurting anything, unless overtime it might cause some hoop damage.

I don't notice a difference in sound when I play the floor tom with the legs on the ground and with it held in the air, so I haven't bothered to add extra rubber or anything to the feet.

As long as you put the same material thickness under all parts that touch the floor I don't see
why it would hurt your hoop any. The hoop is the area that would damage the most from your
pedal being tightened. Just make sure your drum is level and that the bass pedal isn't causing trouble.

I've never seen a drumframe like that CJDG. How exactly is the kick drum suspended and how is the pedal attached for playing; I mean it's not off the ground too is it? (This is my stupid question for the month).

Check this site out for more information on the latest frame
DrumFrame Ltd.
It has a link to the suspension system... think a RIMS type mount.

The one I have is a bar that extends from underneath... then it has a carriage type assembly which supports the drum at four points. There is also two straps, one on each side, that connect to the tension rods to hold the drum from swinging left to right. Those four points are basically two bars that you can adjust forward and
back. They allow you to position one near the bass drum resonant hoop, and the
other near the batter side hoop.

this is a pic of my kit when I was playing in Canada with some friends
http://www.drumsetconnect.com/drum-k...6-Boggs-44.jpg

The whole drumframe lets vibrations run through it. The frame has very limited points at which it touches the ground as well allowing more resonance. The drums
just seem to ring forever. I actually use a combination of Evans EC2 heads on the
batter side and Evans G2 on the bottoms of my toms... they just ring with a nice
boooooooom

btw... not a stupid question at all... very few people have seen this product. I find
myself explaining it all the time. I love sharing information about it and letting
people sit down and play at my kit. Everybody just sings that the drums sound great.
