Any ideas on what works best without damaging the cymbals/finishes

Re: homemade cymbal cleaner?

I reviewed the article about cleaning cymbals in the "Drum Lessons" part of this forum. It's all about cleaning products you can buy. I put in the good word for Groove Juice.

Are you implying those products will damange the cymbals? I'd love to hear about some homemade, less harsh solutions if that's the case. I guess if the homemade solutions end up being cheaper, that's a bonus. The Groove Juice, for example, isn't cheap, although it doesn't take much to clean a cymbal.

Cheap, gentle, and good for the environment were my goals.
I've had my cymbals for about seven years and they have never been cleaned. lol

I saw a post on another forum where a member used shampoo. I guess if you want to be environmentally friendly you could use biodegradable shampoo. But I don't know if he/she was kidding or not. They were discussing how to clean certain Paiste cymbals that have a special coating that gets damaged by commercial cymbal cleaners.

Hello all, new to site, although something I found to work well for tarnished cymbals is "Bar Keeper's Friend", it is not abrasive like Comet. It does a fine job with alittle elbow grease and damp sponge. Be sure to wash cymbals with mild soap to remove any dirt or grit that may be on the cymbals, rinse with warm water and sprinkle "Bar Keeper's Friend" on cymbals and start cleaning, always going around cymbals, not up and down cymbal, when done, wash off with mild soap and warm water then, polish with a quality paste car wax. (I DO NOT RECCOMEND GOING OVER PAINTED AREAS BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER TRIED.
