Re: drum solo dvd?

I don't have a DVD collection of drum solos as yet, tenrap. But what's wrong with YouTube? There's everything on there from Buddy Rich to 16 year-old whiz kids doing amazing stuff.

Have you seen this clip? It starts out slow but soon gets amazing. It drives me crazy, especially at the 7:15 mark when he starts stick twirling -- as if his playing technique wasn't good enough!

Re: drum solo dvd?

At first that solo depressed me -- I'm almost 50 and don't have anywhere near that kid's skills. But then I just tried to enjoy it, for the sheer musicality and to admire the hours of practice time that guy must have put in. I can learn from him. That's a much better frame of mind to be in, isn't it?

I started listening to a different radio station lately that plays alternative Canadian folk-type stuff. The drumming is super simple but it always adds to the interesting, very creative songs. I remembered that one of my skills is adding colour to simple songs through tasty rhythms and interesting sound choices. Not every drummer has to be super flashy all the time.

Youtube is free! Plenty of talent there. I kept waiting for that dude to juggle the kit too.

Ya, that might work...throw a piccolo snare through the air in a wide arc and do a one-handed roll as it flies overhead. Maybe a bit too flashy?

I don't care what anyone says, I love seeing the stick twirling tricks, as long as the music doesn't suffer. I saw a BonJovi concert and the drummer might as well have been covered in a sheet or playing off stage for all of the entertainment value he provided. The guy's obviously a talented pro but I think it's okay to aim higher in terms of being fun to watch.

You don't have to twirl but he made it look really awesome. Shows how comfy he is on the kit. Did anyone notice his snare seemed level to his mount toms? The kik looks like 22inch but I can't see how it all lines up unless he is very tall or something.

He does look tall and he's got all the drums arranged far lower than I'm comfortable with. But I think that kick drum is small, like a 20", so the mounted toms are low down. There's a big gap between the drums and cymbals. It leaves lots of space to see his artistry.
