Beginner with no money needs a starting point

Hello

I purchased a used drum set about a year ago and I realize that I need to start from the beginning. Is there any self taught or practice exercises I can do.Maybe some basic foot and snare patterns? I was recently laid off so I don't have the money for lessons or to buy videos/books. Is there a free online source or something I can follow?
Thanks for all your help.

Welcome to the world of DRUMMING! First of all, do you know how to read music? If so, you can start with the rudiment exercises in Modern Drummer Magazine. You can also find free drum lessons at drumbum.com. If these do not work for you let me know and I can put together some basic lessons to get you started.

My advice. Get a set of headphones, put on your favourite songs and bash away. If lessons are not an option there is a lot of on line stuff and also a lot of pretty affordable books to teach you the basics. It all comes down to practice, practice, practice. And most of all, have fun.
Regards

Re: Beginner with no money needs a starting point

I purchased a few Jared Falk lessons DVD's for my son when Jared started out the lessons. That's before he moved from the west coast to the mid northern area. I had to wait for the videos because some got ruined in a flood. But the wait was worth it for my son. Jared's lessons are good. Kudos to don11817 for doing the research. Josh brings out a good point on, do let anyone, especially yourself to bring you down and don't get cockeyed when you get good. Best of luck to all beginners.
