DW vs SONOR

I need some advice what set has a better sound DW or SONOR I mean the higher end SONOR DRUMS the SQ2 or DELITE I know that DW is a Name but I'm interested in Souind as I haven't heard very many SONOR SETS. I was told that the regular Sonor sets sound as good as DW if anybody can give me their opinion I would definitely appreciate it. SLINGERLAND

Re: DW vs SONOR

lol...can't really tell you if they "sound good"...I love how my sonor force3003 sounds. 8ply maple shells work nicely for what I play. Both companies though make great kits though, just have to decide who builds the shells/what type of wood is used that you want.

I don't know who builds the shells for Sonor or DW do you? especially Sonor I'm talking about set for set that's like a maple set from DW VS maple set from SONOR AND BIRCH vs BIRCH and the same plies of wood making up of the shells and so on. SLINGERLAND

Re: DW vs SONOR

The DW kit that I have...DW made the shells. I have a little experiance with the Sonor. I can varify the construction of the DW kit is truley top of the line and the sound is great as well. I don't know about the construction of the Sonor but I feel that they are well made as well ( I'm sure they did not get the reputation they have by poor construction). The Sonor kit that I played was a top of the line kit ( not sure of the series) but they sounded great. When you are at the level that You are speaking of it's all about choice, they are all great in their own way, continue to invstigate as You are.

Re: DW vs SONOR

Yea, both companies are great...IMO I would choose a sonor over a Dw though. Sortof a hard question, I mean your sound can change with new heads to acheive whatever you're looking for. If you're asking which company has shells that are perfectly on the pitch they're supposed to be...well I have no clue.

Re: DW vs SONOR

Sonor IS my pick out of these two, on durability alone. If you choose, their top of the line hardware and shells are RIDICULOUSLY well-made, and a lot of this filters down to their lower lines.

I own two Sonor kits, a Force 3007 and a 1-off custom made Designer.

Both dw and Sonor make their own shells, and both sound great (although different). To be fair, the sound is mostly going to be reflective of what youre doing with drumheads, but projection, volume and sensitivity only come from having a good quality shell, and both Sonor and dw have this.

For me it was a simple choice - Sonor have been around longer than any other drum manufacturer, they know what their doing, their quality is second to none and they were willing to LISTEN to my needs.

Youll be spending big dollars either way, but it will be worth it if you do your homework.

Re: DW vs SONOR

Slingerland-- wonderiong what type of music you are going to play on the DW or Sonor kit.

Sonor drums are louder than the DW's in my experience, but they don't sacrifice tone and tune-ability for volume. They still sing with beautiful tone when played at dynamically lower levels--something to do with the way they make their shells-- very expressive drums.

The Sonor hardware is bullet-proof. I haven't seen ANYTHING else that can come close to the quality, strength and overall durability of the high end Sonor stands and gear.

I have always been fascinated by the Sonor sound, I started liking their drums in the 80's when Iron Maiden came into the metal scene. Nikko McBrain was the most technical drummer in metal at that time and he played Sonor and Paiste exclusively, with thundering low end and wonderful sound around the toms. His snare was one of the best sounding snares I've heard even today in metal.

The most recent player to use Sonor exclusively and who swears by them and their quality is Thomas Lang. I spoke with him at a clinic about his drums, trying to find out where he stood on the brand (is he endorsed because he likes the name, or because of the drums?). His response was clear: he could play any drums made--money was no object--and the best drums and hardware he has ever played are the Sonors, so naturally he had to have them...

My 2 cents and a brief sampling of Sonor's impact on music...

Re: DW vs SONOR

I have a sonor force 3007 set with maple finish. The most important thing about sonor drums, is that they are meant to be dark hard hitting drums. Especially with a wood like maple, it amplifies the sound. I've found that my toms are can easily be tuned to near perfection for the dark sound i strive for, but my snare is a bit of a problem since a darker snare doesn't give the crack i'm looking for... I mean, it's alright but i've heard better snares. DW is also a very strong sound, but if I'm not mistaken, they are based more on brighter fusion type sound. I've also heard that DW drums have riduculously high durablity. All and all ultimately the decision is yours, but if you really think about what sound you want (what style you play) the choice will be more obvious.

Re: DW vs SONOR

I wouldnt say that Sonors are necessarily suited to darker tones, and certainly maple isnt necessarily known for it.
Personally, I think it depends mostly on what you are trying to achieve and whether or not you get the right heads/tuning for your purpose.

Certainly my Sonor is as bright as I need it, and also has incredible lows.

Id also take Sonors durability WAY over dw's, especially when it comes to shell durability.
