Drum machines!!

Hey ya'll,
I want to get a drum machine! does anyone have any info/experience on which are good quality, functionality, price, etc.? I like the Akai XR20 because I obviously cant afford the MPC. I also looked at the alesis sr-18. I want to be able to make some cool beats as well as add to my drum kit's effect: live, recording, and practice. (price range- $100-350) Any advice would be appreciated! thanks!

Re: Drum machines!!

I know some guys on another forum that use Alesis stuff and swear by it. The Akai looks to be a little more functional, but I don't know what you're wanting to do. I'm not that technical/digital savvy, (I miss Analog in many ways- but I'm an old dude). I own and use Roland SPD-S, but I'm still after 1 1/2 years on the medium arc of the learning curve. It was pricey though, and probably NOT what you're looking for to use. I wish I had an entire week to just study and learn the damn thing, take notes. Roland s Manuals are severely frustrating and confusing. I do better just running through the different settings and waves by myself than attempting to understand what they say in the manual.
Probably not much help, but I tried and I felt sorry for ya-
