Re: any tips on how to practice?

Well best tip I can give you would be to get a good teacher to help you. If that isn't practical some suggestions I have for practicing is devide your practice time between technique and learning to play beats. For technique rudiments are a great start. Another practice tip is to use a metronome or click track to practice to.

It's very difficult to advise you on stick control without actually seeing how you are holding the sticks. That's why a teacher is such a great idea when you're first starting out. Good luck and hang in their I'm sure you'll get better if you keep working.

If you hav trouble in finding a teacher. Jus log on to » Free Drum Lessons - Learn How To Play Drums Online .It's a free site where you can learn drums from the beginning(i.e, holding the sticks). N 'if you think you can do it,you can really do it'.... It's all about self interest.. You hear a stroke in a song then take your sticks n try making out those patterns in your drum kit,you can surely figure out wit ease... Hav fun while drumming!;-)

TO EJ MASTER if you have never taken a lesson now is the time to start if at all possible. If that's not then you can search youtube for drum lessons and see if you can find something for yourself. There are hundred's of books out, look at a few Alfred puts out a very simple easy to understand book look it over, you can always use it as a reference.

GOOD LUCK SLINGERLAND

Re: any tips on how to practice?

Yes i would have to agree, youtube has done wonders for the world of drummers
they have a lot of information, also start listening at some music you like and try to
play along with it.Practice on a pillow and with bigger sticks than you would play with, this will get you going.Learn to use both styles of holding the sticks, Match grip, and traditional Grip, most softer music is played with traditional grip,(jazz, music, somba,) Rock and most pop is match grip used, along with the moeller technique. For power.Get a book called Drum sessions, it comes in a series 1 2, 3
it will teach you how to read, and play.If you can afford a teacher get one. When playing try to play with the Bead of the stick not the shoulder this is how drummers break sticks a lot, beating on the rim of the drum with the shoulder of the sticks, this is wrong.Learn to play slow, speed will come latter, get the basics
first, And have fun
