Lookin at drums, which side?

The look of a drumkit is very complex. We all spent our pre-smackin days adoring the front of the set, studying the infinate covering possibilities, marvelling at the acres of chrome and steeped in mysticism about exactly what that maniac was doing back there.

Then we got our own sets and suddenly it's whole new ball game. The surfaces staring back at you. The sheen of your cymbals, the wear and grime of your heads all crying out for you to release their creative potential. It's another world of leaving behind the sparkle and getting down to busness.

So which side of the kit do you prefer to gawk at? Do you like to gaze in awe at the glossy fortress and wallow in the myths of the beast? Or do you prefer to catapult yourself past the gates and look the monster in the eyes in preparedness for the onsluaght to come?

Me I generally prefer the later. Sometimes when I get back their I just like sit for a second, let the suspense wash over me and marvel at the possibilities. But on the odd occassion (usually at gigswhen she's on show)I'll find myself perving in quiet awe at her outer beauty, feeling like I'm a goofy teen again and awaiting someone else to come and give her a good thrashing.

So come on give us a vote.

Good question! The front always serves to be the the initial "whoa let's have a look at this!" for me, but when the school kid awe disappears a split second later I much prefer to watch from the throne perspective to see the nuts and bolts. It is what goes on behind the set that really makes those nice looking kits sing!

skinslapper you sound like a writer or some kind of poet! you couldnt have said what you did better, though.

for me, part of me wants to just sit in front and admire it, but the stronger part wants to get behind it and do with it what its made for... sometimes the admiring part is harder to overcome because some sets are more beautiful than others and i just have to look longer than usual before i can wrench my eyes away and play

I wish you'd have phrased the questions from the poll a little different. I had to check to see if I was even in the same forum.

I like to gawk at mine fron the drivers seat and contemplate whats missing. Haven't been around for awhile. Hope everyones good.

Skinslapper, got your CD. Thank you! Very cool.
(sorry to steal the thread, carry on)

I'm still fascinated by the front view of others' kits -- the dream kits I wish I could sit behind, especially ones with a big rack (hmmm). And even more than that, I really dig the aerial view shots in magazines and videos, where you get to see the chrome, plus the cymbals, plus the drum surfaces.
