gravity roll lately ive been trying a technique that is new to me. its the gravity roll/blast. this is a single handed roll done by rocking the stick on the rim of the snare.
the only instruction ive had is youtube and i am making progress. but does anyone have any experience with gravity rolls? i could use some advice on it.
thanks -butter. |

Re: gravity roll Mr. Butter, remember that trick with the pencil were you hold it just right near the middle and shake your hand up and down so as to make the stick look rubbery.
Well the single hand drum roll is similar to that. The difference is that when you master it with a drum stick, that balance point of the stick is where the snare rim goes and your hand is further back to keep that momentum going. |

Re: gravity roll Good question !
I search a few years for the technique, but i still don't get it..
If u follow youtube, u should rest the balance-part of your stick on the rim, and then hit the snarehead with yourstick, let it bounce and that, on a fast tempo..
But, it doesn't work if i try it |

Re: gravity roll Hey! I posted this a couple years ago and now I have learned how to do it. I've found the trick is getting the roll started. The motion itself is pretty easy, but you need to start it correctly.
Make sure you start with the stick above the rim pointing toward the head, not already resting on the rim or head. From there, push the stick down and begin the rocking "up and down" motion. It's hard to explain, but I think Johnny Rabb has the best videos for it. |

Re: gravity roll Dang you passed me, I'm still at the party trick stage, it might be how close I sit to my snare, having my snare flat, or simply lack of practice...
I might start next friday my bassist has been bugging me about them. |

Re: gravity roll Go for it, Gus. My snare is flat, but you could try a change just to see. I practiced with pencils in class and stuff just because I was bored and figured it out pretty quickly after that.
Soren, make sure your hands and wrists are relaxed. You have to use your wrist of course, but theres no extra force. It's just a different way to use the head and rim together I guess. |
