Recent spam activity

Well I don't know about the rest of you guys, but the recently FLOOD of spammers has been pretty discouraging to say the least. My email inbox is slammed with posts about nothing in threads that are 2+ years old and its getting pretty old.

So, I know there are only 2 mods and if you guys are busy or away for a weekend things can get out of hand quick--any ideas about making more mods to help regulate in your absence?

The regular posters and "older" members (like 6+ months) seem to have disappeared during the influx of spammers and activity is minimum. The reason they post in the forum is because their posts automatically get forwarded via email to every member who has written or subscribed to that thread, and they increase their exposure via keyword search on the search engines. So they didn't have to "buy" your email address for their ad campaign--they had the forum do the work for them.

I've looked at other drum forums and the smaller ones seem to be fighting the same set of spam posters--or at least it is the same group of people cuz the spam is almost identical. In one forum all the new posts were by spammers--in every thread. They effectively shut that forum down because eventually members will delete their accounts to stop the spam mails to their inbox... Let's not have that happen here, shall we??

Re: Recent spam activity

i agree in every way. more mods would definitely be good. also, im not sure how it works, but wikipedia has an anti spam thing so when someone edits or makes a page that is bs or advertisement, its deleted right away. its really effective, and if an account spams too much, thier account is deleted and they cant do anything from that IP adress anymore.

obviously wikipedia is a much bigger site than DSC, but if we had a system like wikipedia's, spamming would stop tenfold i bet. maybe its live people with a job spotting the spam, but its called something like "bot-filter" so i dont know if its people or computers.

if its possible for us to have anything like this, we should get it. if we did, i think one spam post should get an account deleted, cuz most of the spammers get one post and then leave forever.

maybe this idea isnt a good one, i dunno cuz i dont know much about this bot thing. but i thot id suggest it.

Re: Recent spam activity

Sorry guys, I was away over the weekend so we were a mod short, and I know it was real bad from last Thursday through Monday because I get an email for every reported post. I have started to ban them right away, and this seems to slow them down some.

Is there something that can be done regarding registration - ie making it more thorough so these morons simply dont bother going through the process?

You know,
you can kind of tell if a spammer posted on a thread
because their name is usually all lower case letters and sounds weird to pronounce it.
This happened last month too.
I agree with all of you. 2 mods just isn't enough.
Sorry if it offends the current mods!

Re: Recent spam activity

The MODs can't do much without DSC's permission. That entails lots of time to get the MODs to do what they have to get done.

If we all email DSC directly, we may get DSC to give the MODs more control over this matter.

I've contacted DSC directly in the past with this and got responses really long after the damage had been done. But as for the spamming and botting, I've gotten nothing back from DSC directly.

I completely agree with all of you. I've been posting less due to this and getting a little tired of it.

Even I was tempted in getting off the forum, but we all as drumming brothers need to stick together. So I would suggest to email DSC directly. This is really not the MODs fault, in fact I think they have been doing the best they can. We all need to get to the main source of control, So email DSC directly.

I really don't think that DSC would want loose any members due to the crap we get in our emails. If we all copy and paste the spamming from our mail box, and send them to DSC directly, I'm sure they would wake up after getting all the spams back to them. I might get kicked out of the forum for suggesting this, but I bet it would work.

I would be willing to get kick out, if it keeps the dirty crap from getting to the minors on the forum.

Tellemarketers are just as bad with the phones.

Re: Recent spam activity

You won't be banned for speaking your mind and sharing ideas, afterall that is exactly what this place is for. I think we can add a couple of things to the software which will cut this spamming down in a big way.

After some extensive reasearch into the matter, I have learned that a well educated and determined spammer can get past any of the measures we take to stop spamming, but we can sure knock a big dent into it.

Hang in the fellow drummers and don't be discouraged, we will get get it under control.
