Re: Any Tips For Someone who is starting Play along to your favorite bands. It is how you get better you copy others styles to make them your own. Its not like you have to play just what they do but you add on with adding on more people. |

Re: Any Tips For Someone who is starting If I were to suggest anything, learn Rudiments, you dont need to of course, there are drummers who dont bother learning them, but there a great help when drumming, and another thing is dont start off too hard, build good hand and feet independentcy, the first song I learned on drums, was Back In Black, it helps get you out of the habit of hitting the bass on the snare when you arent supposed to, and just overall building great independentcy between your limbs.

Re: Any Tips For Someone who is starting There are lots of free drum lessons on YouTube.com and if your interested in learning to read music, there are lots of good sites on the internet. Freedrumlessons.com is another example.
You do however do need to learn some rudiments. There are 40 essential rudiments. You don't need to learn them all, but you do need to learn the basics. I'm a self taught drummer and started when I was 8 years old. That was about 50 years ago.
You can find rudiment videos on YouTube and for reading them here is a good site and it contains lots of good tips also: Drum lessons by Jacob Kaye musician, drummer, private drum teacher and his band - offers professional drum lessons .
Later on as you progress, you can learn how to use your limbs to apply them to what style of drumming you need to learn. Practice is the key factor in any style of drumming.
Welcome to the forum. Good luck on your quest.
Happy drumming and many blessings.

Re: Any Tips For Someone who is starting start off slow, you wont become a superstar over night
learn, at the very least, the basic rudiments
play along with CD's...like the guy said above, even if its not identical to whats actually being played, this will teach you timing and structure. |

Re: Any Tips For Someone who is starting To CHAZPATCH I've been playing for over 40 years and I started out with lessons, if you are able to take lessons do it, if not then follow TAINOJIM'S advice he's very thorough and knows what he's talking about. GOOD LUCK SLINGERLAND |

Re: Any Tips For Someone who is starting just play along to a bunch of different bands that you like. it actually helps a LOT to find a guitarist or bassist about the same level as you and just start jamming. you get a lot more motivated to learn. |

Re: Any Tips For Someone who is starting Yeah, like almost everybody above, play with Cd's, and if you have records, slow it down, and learn what your playing get used to it, and then spead up and learn the time, but do take lessons as well, even though I never got the chance to have lessons, I think it would help. And follow Tainojims, advice as well. |
