You still have the original heads that came with the drums, right. Those are coated heads and you replaced the heads to get a more boom power out of them. You only replaced the batter heads and kept the original heads on the resonator side.
Now am I with you so far, you also have to replace the resonator heads with the same type of heads. Mixing heads on the same drums will cause problems.
Put the original heads back on and get some resonator gel. It only costs about 5-10 bucks. That will cut down on the resonance of the drum depending on how much gel you place on the tops. Including the snare.
If you use less gel you get more resonance, more gel less resonance. Got it so far. Now don't go on waisting your money until you get used to the sound of your kit.
If your not pleased with the sound and you already got the ebony heads for the top, then get the ebony heads for the bottom. Now this has to do with a balance on the way that drum heads are made.
You just can't go around mixing brands or types of drum heads. Other wise the only head will be yours getting a headache.
As for the snare if you want that high note, then use double coated heads and not ebony for the snare. Does this make sense to you now? |

Re: heads, they are killing me That is great advice Jim.
I like my snare to have a crisp crack with little overtone, so I use an Evans ST Dry snare batter and an Evans Hazy 300 snare reso. |

Then we will really have some kicks on the forum. Can't wait to get back on the drum throne Bro. It shouldn't be long now. |

Those heads you tossed, are pricey. You never know when you need some temporary back up heads. No need to cry over spilled milk and that's the way the cookie crumbles. If you knew any better, you would have come to use for advise first. Lots of drummers here to help on the forum. Anyway you know better now.
Let us know how it turns out. I guarantee that once you put those ebony puppies on the bottom, you'll be happier than a puppy in a room full of rubber balls.
Happy drumming and the best to you. |

Clear your mind for a little while. I'll give you a suggestion.
I own a 9 piece Gretsch USA Maple Custom drum kit. I use Remo Pinstripes all around the kit. If you think that a 45 bearing is hard, you can't imagine what it's like to tune the 30 degree. You got the Drum Dial, that's a step in the right direction. As far as the tuning spectrum goes, it's up to the individual. I find that it's easier to tune from high tension spectrum to a lower one give the best results. This way the heads are seated tightly and give you a full guarantee that as you go to a lower tuning range you'll are the only one that will know when to stop. Trust your ears to tell you when you get to your taste in the sound results. I hope you got the tuning chart for that tool, it's really helpful. If not, go to the website to print one out at DrumDial.com.
Here is the link: Tuning Chart
When it comes to drums here at the forum, we are drumming siblings helping, exchanging ideas and even at times, get into each others hair. But the end result is always a good one. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
