Did You Learn To Play This Way?

I am asking the question - Did anyone learn to play by just listening to music and picking out the drum parts and then try to duplicate it? That's how I learned. I'm also very upset anytime I'm watching concerts or videos and they just give me a snippet of the drummer. What gives? Also, when in a music store, at a Hard Rock cafe or some other place, why not t-shirts for drummers instead of all the guitar shirts? I'm just say...

Re: Did You Learn To Play This Way?

I learned the traditional way - rudiments and music reading classes at first. When i got behind my first drum set sheet music was very expensive to buy, particularly popular band's sheet music, so with all the basics in tact I mimic'd the sound I heard and learned many songs that way. As a matter of fact when I was actively gigging I played alot of those same songs without ever seeing the sheet music.

So I guess in my case the answer is yes and no.

As for your other points...ya it really pisses me off when you see the drummer for about 10 total seconds in a video or taped concert. The hard rock cafe hasn't figured out that without drummers, guitar players would sound sheet!

I completely agree with you on all levels man!
I now just experiment with old beats to make new ones, look at the drum book I acquired, or listen to music and learn to play along.
I think they should really show the drummer more often too.
Thats just really pathetic.
Haha. Yeah Der.
Guitar is nothing without drums.
more like 10 seconds through the whole show!

Re: Did You Learn To Play This Way?

yep,
listen learning is easiest on drums (in my opinion.)
Guitar is basically nothing without drums.
It's harder to make a guitar solo to perform in front of people by yourself
than it is to make a drum solo.

Although, it won't hurt to have a music book handy.
I have one and whenever I get bored I just flip through it, and see what looks interesting
to me to play.
You got to have some sort of game plan.

Re: Did You Learn To Play This Way?

At first I did, then when I had more beats under my belt I started making the beats fit into the songs, that the other drummer didn't use.

What ever works!
