sizes--set-up--comfort--etc.

Ive been playing for over 12 years and i STILL! go through drum size and set-up turmoil. 12's and 13's just dont do it for me. Two up one floor, one up- two down, two up two down....im searching for ME....know what i mean?. Ive ALWAYS liked the tone of 8's and 10's so im going with an 8-10 top with the 14x14 16x16 floors.

18'' floors can sound really nice but kind of mud out through sound reinforcement IMO. Am i all alone here in the search for as much comfort as possible while trying to work around set-up?. Im going to break from the pack so to speak and do this 8-10 top thing. It may look a bit different but in the search for ME......MY SOUND ive got to trudge ahead.

Under the microscope are all of you 100% undeniably totally uncompromisingly comfortable?.

Mr. resonut, what kit do you have and what style of drumming do you play?

Currently i have two kits, a Premier Signia kit as well as a Sonor 3007. I am playing in an 8 piece horn band doing some Chicago, Stevie Wonder, variety type things etc. After years of sitting super low i may even start sitting a bit higher. Comfort wise id rather play a 20''BD but i dont want to go smaller than my 18x22. Im always in this set up dilemna.

I did a little research on these kits. Their both top mounts on the bass drums. Have you tried placing them on stands?

They are both good drum kits. In my years of drumming I always had the same problem with getting comfortable with bass drum mounted toms. But with a stand you have more versatility with positioning them the way I needed.

Am I going in the right direction with this?

Re: sizes--set-up--comfort--etc.

tainojim: Im not fond of putting the 10-12 on a stand to the left as it moves the 10 to far left messing with hi-hat placement. Using L-rods on a stand left AND right could be slightly better but there is to much distance in that manner between the two. Ive not experimented with the Tama type flatter tom kits...i forget the name but its a consideration.

About a month ago i put the 8-10 12-16 combination up and was pretty surprised at the power and projection of the 8....thus...im not apprehensive about an 8 10 up top the BD set up.

The 8 to 10 would give more leeway as apposed to the 10 to 12. The tonality would be changed tremendously. But will that fit with the rest of the band's music. Then again you have been playing long enough to improvise where it's needed. So go with the 8 to 10 and see if it fits with the rest of the sound.

Tainojim: i actually used the 10-16 only on a job and got along fine. Maybe this 8-10 thing is my ticket to uniqueness and my own voice?. Rarely have i heard another drummers 12 where it turned my head and no matter how much time i spend on tuning or head combinations 12's are always the thorn in my side.

Reach for your goals and I would suggest getting a DrumDial for tuning if you haven't gotten one already. I helps to get within the tuning spectrum and then you can fine tune the drums. I play a 9pcs Gretsch kit and tuning all of them without this tool, it would take days before i finally get them to sound the way I want.

Maybe your not getting the right spectrum tone from the 12" tom.

Good luck on your quest.
