They play both depending on the song. The snare usually has a mic close by to pick up the sound. I honestly don't know any hard rock songs with rim shots so they are usually played with a softer guitar sound. I searched this forum a lot when i first joined way back in 2009 I found this resource helpful for anyone that is drumming. A lot of the info was basic knowledge for me but there was a trick or 2 in those segments i picked up on. It has free videos and i think rim shots are played in one section on how to get the best sound. I don't play to many rim shots but i will be for a benefit concert soon. Stay around this a good forum and people here have a lot of knowledge and are very kind. Keep drumming

Enjoy

Hi MaKoTo,

The rim shots are used a lot, but not always easy to pick up in a busy drum piece.

I use quite a bit of rimmies myself, that is why I angle the snare slightly sloping away from me, also when you hit more parallel (instead of "into" the head) you get much more refinement in your play when you want to play the "subtle" parts.

Cheers and Happy Drumming,

Harry

I found an excellent resource about rim shots you might want to read upon when you have time. Tomás Howie Drumming Web - Technique It talks about rim shots and some other basic stuff. The site also has other good educational materiel about drumming in general. I hope this helps. I like the part about hitting the snare and at the same time but it is harder on your sticks
