Re: Drummers Health - SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME I never played drums in my life but it's my favourite instrument and I have little idea about how it's played. 3 weeks back I bought myself an electronic drum kit, since I didn't have a throne I sat on a chair and starting hitting pads, bass, hi hat. After couple of hours I managed play a simple rock beat, I couldn't believe myself. The issue is, the very next day I started getting little pain in my lower back, after few days it became worse. I went thru net and found out that maintaining inproper posture leads to sever back and spine injuries. I didn't want to give up, I bought a throne and continued playing with proper sitting posture but now I have the lower back pain whole day, it's terrible. Can someone help me PLEASE? |

Re: Drummers Health That's the Lumbar area of the back. Perhaps you should try playing the relaxed method of drumming. I've seen lots of old drummers in my time that started playing in a hunched position and as they got older, now I see them play in the relaxed position. Niel Pert is one good example, even Frank Beard from ZZ Top.
Look around this site: YouTube - relaxed drumming
Also, please see a doctor to make sure you don't have any injuries. |

Re: Drummers Health Hey,
Thanks for the great link. As a drummer I've had a lot of problems with injuries. I've had a bad wrist for about 6 years now, and a few years ago I hurt my knee. This caused me to be out of the game for about a year. It's really important to do the right things to ensure that you do not injure yourself at the kit, or off the kit. |

Re: Drummers Health BAD Boys,
Get the book Treat Your Own Back by Robin McKenzie. For close to $10 you'll learn all about the posture issues. Basically, you need to maintain an arch in your back as you play. But if you've got pain already, it will tell you what to do with that.
This book got me through the worst back injury of my life when I was on an island in Lake Superior. I originally found it in the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroscience when I was being treated for a whiplash injury.
Most back pain resolves itself in six weeks, no matter how you treat it. |

Re: Drummers Health dtxtremeiiispecial ,
Thanks for recommending Treat Your Own Back by Robin McKenzie.
I have been battling lower back fatigue on/off for years. I just found the book at Thriftbooks for 3.99 with free shipping! They have a few left too.

Re: Drummers Health I've found that as I get older I can't do the things I used to do at the drum kit. My right arm gets tight along with my wrist, and I feel I'm going to loose the stick from my right hand.
I have to do a long warm up now before I start playing, that seems to help. |

Re: Drummers Health There is also a link between drummers and heart related disorders and blood clot Aneurysm
example: Monster of a Headache
R.E.M. was rocking their way through Europe during their 1995 "Monster" Tog when drummer Bill Berry got a sudden, terrible headache and could not see. Berry had a brain aneurysm, which wa operated on immediately. The surgery XNas a complete success, and the band was able to finish touring with their excelleiit drummer.
drummers who died of heart failure:
Michael Clarke - drummer for The Byrds
