When recording, I prefer to leave mikes and technique to the engineer. He is responsible for final product, so I leave that to him/her.

I need input about mikes and technique for Live performance. Wish I played arenas, but still in the clubs. Basic instinct is KISS - so I like 3 mikes, 1 for the kick, 2 OH. Somewhat on budget, but would like to know about the SM-57's as OH mikes. How do these work for live performance? Do condenser mikes pick up less sound from bass/guitar? Sound better for overall kit sound?

The SM-57's work well with any instrument.

Even as overheads.

Although there have been some improvements made with the SM-57 drum mic kits.

any thoughts on the Audix DP7 microphone package for live performances? I am behind the drums and really never hear them. Thanks, Tom

I have my bass drum mics inside, with the front heads removed. The mics are mounted on short stands (desktop variety). These are the Sennheiser E-602's. They are made for low frequency, high spl levels. The stands are placed on top of thick foam cushions to isolate them from the shell. I use one mic between each of my four mounted toms, and one between my two floor toms. Two of these tom mics are audio technica dynamic and two are Oktava electret condenser. I use a Blue Spark condenser for both the hi-hat and snare from above. I have found no need for overhead or cymbal mics, as those come through on recordings just fine. There are a multitude of ways to mic drums and I have had amazing results with fewer, inexpensive dynamic mics. EQ goes along way to help with any shortfall a given mic may reveal. Trial and error is the only sure way of discovering what may work for you in your given acoustic environs.

Those mics should work fine. What is more important is your sound equipment, the mixing and the competence of the soundman.

Yes, the SM-57 has been the workhorse of recording drums for decades. One cannot go wrong in employing those in any setting.
