Coordination: Hands, feet, mouth...

Hey guys. I haven't practicved much, or be on a lot because the remodeling up stairs is going painfully slow. But When I do practive, I've noticed that my left hand and foot don't like to work without each other. If my foot goes faster than my hand, my hand matches the speed... not really ideal on a hi-hat.

Now I'm sure all of you know this already, so my question is there somethign I can do to help stop doing it, or is it something I'm just going to have to live with?

Unfortunately, this is all down to subconscious muscle memory.

What you need to do is re teach your muscles.

It will take time.

Start doing whatever beat it is thats flustering you very sllloooowly, and I mean slow. Then gradually get faster until youre really fast. Then the rythm is in your muscle memory. But you will then keep getting it wrong, but just keep practicing. You have to retrain your brain.

Alright, sounds like everything else. Do it slowly and work your way up. Thanks!

Yeah. This is a learnt behaviour and can be overcome. You've got to practise beats and rudiments that indentify the problem, very slowly so you are making conscious decisions to move your limbs. Once you have an unfettered groove start speeding up a little and improvising and before you know it, you'll be around that set free as a bird.

Best suggestion would be to stop doing it.
Kind of like the village idiot who kept hitting his head with a pipe wrench.
When he asked why he did this, his response was, "cause when I stop it feels better".

Seriously it's all in the mind. Motor functions can be broken up by breaking it into little pieces at a time.
Point your index fingers towards each other. Rotate the right finger clockwise while turning the left finger counter clockwise and V/S. If you can master this, your on your way towards breaking up the motor function skill habits. Now this is not a joke.

I hope this helps, it has helped me in the past.
