One-handed rolls

Well I've seen a lot of videos of people doing this but was never able to figure it out. Anyone here actually know how to do it? Care to give some tips?

There are tons of ways to achieve a "one handed roll." Theres a guy on drummerworld that made a fantastic video of how to do it. Here it is: http://www.drummerworld.com/Clinic/Derrick_Pope2.html

Theres also another way, used in blast beats in metal that I like. It uses the rim of the snare drum. I can write out an explanation if you want.

Yeah, could you? That'd be really helpful.

I found this link particularly helpful when learning to do a one-handed roll: http://www.drummagazine.com/html/mod...rticle&sid=650

Of course, I still haven't perfected my technique yet, as it's difficult to learn from a print source. I'm looking forward to checking out the video link that AvengedDrummer posted, because I think that will help me way more. It's much easier to watch someone than it is to try to figure it out alone. And the videos I've found aren't particularly helpful; just people showing off instead of giving actual information.

Alright heres how you do it.

1. Start out with your stick parallel to the snare head. Having the snare flat makes this alot easier.
2. Move your whole arm down from the elbow to the hand so the stick hits the head and rim at the same time, much like a rimshot.
3. Then rock the stick back on the rim so the tip comes off the drumhead.
4. Pull straight up letting the tip hit the drumhead again, and return the stick to the parallel position. It should sound like a quick "da-da"

Then just repeat to get the roll sound. Its important that the tip of the sick and the body hits the head and the rim at the same time, respectively. I can post some pics (or a video) if this is confusing.

That would be really easy with mastery of the moeller technique. I use the moeller alot cause it allows for a continuous triplet roll, and it allows for "three hits for the price of one!"

Hey Avenged,
Thanks for the description. I really appreciate it. I'll try it out and report the results I get with it.

Ok, just been trying this out between takes - it's actually pretty easy to pull off. The thing now is to get comfortable playing it as part of a beat / fill and not lose any flow. I'm sure that's going to take some time.

Is the one handed roll supposed to sound as if you were doing a buzz roll with both hands? That would just open up so many possibilities.
