Questions about sustained notes Hi, I have a red Duke by Dixon, with Evans Water heads, bought used. The two high toms(on the bass drum) last about 5 seconds when I hit them, and the floor and bass last about 10 seconds. I like my hits short and sweet, not long and dragged out. Can anyone help? Would a drum key help, or will I have to get new heads? |

Re: Questions about sustained notes If you like the tone of the drums, but hate the long sustain you can use either dampening heads (Evans EC1 or EC2, Remo Controlled Sound, Aquarian Performance ll or Response 2), or you could use a dampening gel like Moon Gel or even dampening rings.
Normally heads that are worn out won't hold a tune and are dead sounding but if yours are oil filled heads then the fact that they ring is an indication the heads are worn out or dried up. |

Re: Questions about sustained notes Thanks!
Also, they're the oil heads, so are they supposed to have swirly liquid in them? It sounds like an obvious question, but the floor tom has it in the head, but the other two don't. You're probably right then about them being dried up. Thanks again. |

Re: Questions about sustained notes You will see some swirly rainbow looking spots between the two plys and that is normal, but if you see any air pockets that is not. |

Re: Questions about sustained notes I've got Air Pockets on my jeans. There's nothing in them. |

Re: Questions about sustained notes Yeah, but they only have a little bit(I mean a VERY small amount). You can barely see it in the high toms, and a little bit more on the floor tom. Is that bad, and will I need a new head? |

Re: Questions about sustained notes If you can see air pockets the heads are more than likely leaking and they probably need to be replaced. You might try some Moon Gel before you replace heads, it will be less expensive than heads for sure. |

Re: Questions about sustained notes I'll try it then. Thanks! That helps a lot, and I may save money. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
