Hi-hat position

Hello all, I'm brand new to drumming.

I've set up my kit in what I've seen to be the standard for right handed drummers - hi-hat on left, bass drum played with right foot, etc...

Because I'm comfortable playing with my right, I'm playing cross-handed. This seems kind of awkward when I then want to start hitting toms. I could play open handed with my left on the hi-hat, but it's awfully difficult. I guess that would be good exercise.

Is there any reason why I couldn't just put the hi-hat on the right? Snare would stay on the left. My left and right leg play the bass drum equally well. I only ask because I can't seem to find anyone that has set up their kit this way. A left handed setup also moves the snare to the right.

Look up
"Will open handed playing become standard?".

Here at the "Search Drum Set Connect" box located above. You can also use a remote hihat.

well to me, drumsets can be configured in many different ways, and whatevers comfortable to you set it up

it doesn't really matter how people look at your kit, as long as you can play it doesn't matter right?

Re: Hi-hat position

you can set it up however you want. but, in order to operate it as a hi-hat you will have to use the remote system like Tainojim said.

hi-hat pedal on the left like normal, but you can place the actual hi-hats wherever you want.

just search remote hi-hat at your favorite online supplier

The remote hi-hat is a very nice system. Works very well for speed metal playing since you do not have to cross your hands.
