Tom Ring Control

Hello, I am new here but have a desperate question: I have a pearl kit and the toms ring like crazy. I have tuned the botton head a few tones higher than the batter in hopes that the sustain would change, but it hasnt. Is there a good way to deaden or muffle the ring, without getting a cheap sound?

Re: Tom Ring Control

If the heads are new, you may need to break them in. All you do is tighten them(the proper way, not in a circle, google it) evenly, and push in the center with the ball of your hand. If you hear a cracking sound, that's good, it's the glue breaking. Keep doing this until it mostly stops cracking. If they are not new, then you could try getting some Moongels.

Hope it helps! Happy new year!

The head are not new, in fact they are quite old. I will check out the moongels, or another option is the Remo o-ring.

Yeah, they're pretty much the same. Good luck!

Re: Tom Ring Control

You might also want to loosen the resonant heads so they are less tight than the batter heads, this will help some.

What heads are you using on the batter and reso sides?

I am using pearl factory heads for top and bottom. I should probably get new ones

Re: Tom Ring Control

If you do get new ones look for something with dampening rings built in like the Evans EC1 or EC2, this will help considerably.

Re: Tom Ring Control

I just got some evans e-rings today, and LOVE them. Eventually though I will get new heads and learn how to control ring the RIGHT way. But for now, these work great!

Re: Tom Ring Control

Great! There really is no wrong way to control sustain, just what ever sounds good to you really. Glad you got it under control.
