Re: Drum set questions..

Oh yeah. I've been doing that and going to the manufacturers website and listening to the sound clip. I know computer speakers won't do the cymbals justice but it gives me an idea. Right now I've got two old solid state amps that I'm trying to get rid of so I can buy a set of cymbals.

I'm trying to decide what size of cymbals to get. I'm thinking about buying a 14" Sabian AAX Crash for $89.00 new on eBay (too small of a crash?)..hi hats: undecided.

I know I'm sort of buying the cymbals out of order but I'm kind of buying them as I see them, or I guess buy when I see a good deal on one (at least what I think is a good deal).

Again any input would be helpful, you guys have already helped a lot and I really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Re: Drum set questions..

I currently use Sabian AAXplosion crashes and AA crashes and I love them. Do you know which 14" crash it is? (Studio, Dark,X-plosion fast, or X-plosion)

If you like the sound that is a smoking deal on that cymbal for sure.

"Too small of a crash?" - Only you can be the judge of that, I know there are many pros that use 14" crashes. If you like the sound then it is perfect, if you don't then I would say try something bigger.

To get a better idea of what size cymbals you want to look for take a look at what the drummers you listen to and like are using, that is a good starting point.

Re: Drum set questions..

Hey thanks for the reply, it's a AAXplosion 14" crash.

I've done what you suggested before and the only problem is is that there are a ton of cymbals that they use (i.e. Matt Kuykendall) so it's hard for me to tell/distinguish which I should get on my budget since I can't afford more than probably four right now.

I'm going to head down to the music store again today and take a listen...again..

Re: Drum set questions..

Well to get started I would say you will need hats, a crash and a ride as a bare minimum.

From there I would say future purchases might include another crash, a splash and possibly a china. After those, the rest would be because you want to rather than need to.

Re: Drum set questions..

Okay that helps,
I'll let you know when I buy my first cymbal, which hopefully is very soon.

Thanks a lot again and I'll keep you updated.

Re: Drum set questions..

So after listening to the sound clip on Sabian's website I decided to order the AAXplosion 14" crash new.

Now I'm looking for hi hats...Paiste, Sabian, Zildjian. I'm not certain, but from what I've been told (and correct me if I'm wrong) it sounds likes Paiste is slanted toward the metal genre because of the way they sound.

So right now I'm stuck between getting:

Paiste Alpha Rhythm X-Hat cymbal pair.

or

Sabian AAX..not sure.

or

Finding a used Zildjian used A Custom.

Thanks.

From a quality standpoint you can't go wrong with any of those hat choices.

Re: Drum set questions..

Just gone done practicing for three hours with no cymbals or hi hats, haha. So a little update just to let you know, I ordered:
***********************************************
Sabian AAXplosion 14" Crash ($160 or 170) | ($89) New
Sabian AAX Stage 14" Hi Hats ($319) | ($130) - Slightly used.
Sabian AAX 20" Stage Ride ($265) | ($150) New
***********************************************
On the left is how much it ran for on Musiciansfriend, on the right is what I payed for it. I still want to get a AAX O Zone Splash, I think they sound pretty rad.

Thanks a lot to everyone who replied to me, it definitely helped me a lot!

Re: Drum set questions..

Smoking good deals there, that is the way you get nice cymbals on a budget....well done!

I was interested in the Ozones because I figured I would get a bright splash with short sustain, but I changed my mind after hitting them in person. They sound great on the website but they didn't sound good in person. They do look cool though.

Re: Drum set questions..

Haha thanks.

Do you have any other recommendations on Sabian splashes?

I also liked some of the Paiste splashes..
