recording HELP! super important.

Here's the issue. I have a little over $200 to spend.

I need to record my 5 piece drum kit. What do I need to get with the $200 to get decent quality recording?

so far all I have is a mic stand, a vocal cardioid mic, and a macbook laptop.

What should I get? I need to know as soon as possible!!! before it's too late.

thanks guys

Re: recording HELP! super important.

youre not in a good place man... ive pretty much decided that it takes AT LEAST 3 mics to get any kind of quality sound. in order to record three mics, youll need an input system: an audio interface with at least 3 cable jacks. after you get mics and an interface, youll need software, but macs usually come with at least garage band, which to say the most, is usable.

on your budget, im not sure you can afford 2 more mics and an interface, assuming you already have garage band.
you CAN record with just one mic, but you will have quiet bass sound, and poor quality all around.
you will need an audio interface no matter what, though.

once you get mics, set one up hanging over your head (the overhead mic... good name, right? ), put one inside your bass (the best way to do this is with a port hole reso bass head, otherwise just put it close to the reso head), and then one mic under your floor tom pointing toward your snare.
plug them all in to the input system, and plug the input system into the computer. hit record.
you can run the mics through an amp to adjust recording levels and equalization, but you need a mixer/pa system for that, and you cant afford that. if you already have one, youre in luck.

anyway, if you decide to record with only one mic, then experiment with placing, just move it around until you get a sound you can live with. this way you will only need a single input interface, but its a good idea to get a better one anyway.

these are good mics, but theyll take most of your money:
Buy Shure SM58S Mic with Switch | Dynamic Microphones | Musician's Friend

hope this helps and good luck

do i have to get an audio interface or can i just get a mixer? I can get a mixer with plenty of inputs for under $100. can i just plug the mics into the mixer, and the mixer into the computer. (use the mixer as an audio interface basically)

ya you can do that.

a mixer and an audio interface are basically the same thing. most mixers have a USB audio interface.

and how do those mics look to you?

Re: recording HELP! super important.

they look nice but it would be a lot cheaper to get a kit of drum mics. I could get a CAD 7 piece from musiciansfriend.com for like $150, then a $70 behringer 12 input mixer, and some cheap stands/cords.

What do you think of that?

Here are the mics: either this one and then buy mic stands: Buy CAD PRO-7 7-Piece Drum Microphone Pack | Percussion Microphones | Musician's Friend

or this one and only buy 2 stands (cuz it comes with clips) Buy CAD Premium 7-Piece Drum Microphone Pack | Percussion Microphones | Musician's Friend

and here's the mixer: Buy Behringer EURORACK UB1202 Mixer | Unpowered Mixers | Musician's Friend

sounds like a good plan man. i didnt even think of a mic pack
i would get the second one you mentioned, since you get what you pay for.

Re: recording HELP! super important.

ya youll be able to plug it into your mac and record easily. are you using garage band then?

im not sure if you can plug it into the line-in, but it will plug into your USB input. i think line-in might get better sound quality, but i really have no idea.

Bear in mind that those (7) MICS look like they all have XLR connections and the Behringer mixer only seems to have 4 inputs (XLR).

Line outs to line ins usually works with the right levels but quality might be lacking. With Apple MACS Firewire is the way to go but you will need to save some more

I used to record with a mixer, but was much happier with an audio interface. With the mixer, I had to have my levels just right before recording. If something was off by a little bit, I'd have to re-do the whole thing. I like how the interface allows me more adjustment level after recording. I also could not get the mixer to record onto multiple tracks. The line in wouldn't divide them up. If you want to mix individual drums after you record, I would get an interface. But, if you have limited funds, a mixer is the way to go.
